My Top 10 Favorite CD's of All-Time

My nephew asked me to talk about my top 10 Cd's of all-time and I told him I would. He is a guitarist and has really grown in his talent and that comes from studying past music and players, just like I learned. There are so many styles of music and I like them all from Led Zeppelin to Tony Bennett to Keith Urban to Paul Butterfield to Bob James and Keb 'Mo. There is great music in this country and it also started here. People from other countries put their influence on it, Blues, Jazz, Country and Rock 'N Roll started right here in America. This is one of the hardest things I have done, pick your top 10. Being a musician for over 40 years, I have a ton of favorites, but let's get started:

1. Meet the Beatles/the Beatles-My dad was into the big band era, Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Buddy Rich and many more. So, music was in my family. My mom also played the piano and the tambourine if you have seen my picture section. Dad played great drums so I was influenced by what he liked. I also was into Elvis like all of America. At the same time when the Beatles played the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964 I was hooked like a fish and was reeled in. It still hasn't stopped. I saw Her Standing There, I Want to Hold Her Hand, and All My Lovin sounded like nothing I had heard before and from that point on I was going to be a Rock Drummer!

2.Let it Be/the Beatles-The group that rocked America has had an incredible career! Beatles '65, Revolver, Rubber Soul, Hard Days Night, the White album, Sgt. Peppers, Abbey Road, there are just so many....! I loved the John Lennon material, I loved Paul's too, yet John's material touched me the most. Let it Be had the title song plus the Long and Winding Road, I've Got a Feeling, Across the Universe, Dig a Pony, Dig It and more. This is definitely my all-time favorite rock band...!

3. Are You Experienced/Jimi Hendrix-I was experienced at this time, this was one of the greatest records I ever heard and as with the ones before I mentioned, I still listen to them today. There's also Hey Joe, Manic Depression, Foxy Lady, Stone Free, Wind Cries Mary, just an incredible piece of work! Yet I have to mention Axis Bold as Love which has Little Wing and 6 To 9, not to mention Electric Ladyland with Crosstown Traffic, All Along the Watchtower,Voodoo Chile another masterpiece. For you young players and I mean musicians not pimps, listen to all of these Cd's.

4. In Rock/Deep Purple-This was my 1st experience with real heavy rock. What would be later called Heavy Metal. I saw Deep Purple tour this album in 1970. They opened the show for Rod Stewart and the Small Faces. Deep Purple came out and did such a heavy show and I mean heavy, I was amazed. Ian Gillan, in the song Speed King, when the laugh on the record came he did a high scream for 60 seconds, maybe 120 it was a long great scream, absolutely incredible...! There also was Child in Time, Into the Fire, Livin Wreck and Hard Lovin Man. The rest of the group were all top notch players: Ritchie Blackmore guitarist set a new standard for the instrument, Ian Paice a drummer that did the same, plus Jon Lord on Hammond B-3 and Roger Glover. Also listen to Machine Head, Burn, and Made in Japan-Live. This band changed Rock 'N Roll! If you love metal, Deep Purple started it, Listen to it!

5. Debut/Led Zeppelin-I grew up on big bands, and blues, I mention the big bands my Dad played, Blues I listened to was Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson, Willie Dixon, Howlin Wolf, Paul Butterfield, and many more. At the time I was playing in a blues band called Short Stuff and we did all this type of Blues and I was still in high school. I then heard Led Zeppelin's debut album and it rocked my socks off because they were doing straight Blues but HEAVY. Big drums, awesome arrangements, which was mostly Jimmy Page or as we all called him Pagey. Good Times-Bad Times, Babe I'm Gonna Leave You, I Can't Quit You Baby, You Shook Me, How Many More Times was definitely one of my favorites. From this point on I personally went toward the heavy Blues oriented Rock 'N Roll. This record made an influence on me like Meet the Beatles and Are You Experienced! I Loved this...!

6. 4/Led Zeppelin-This is yet another classic by Led Zeppelin! Black Dog, Rock 'N Roll, Stairway to Heaven, Going to California, Misty Mountain Hop, 4 Sticks, and When the Levee Breaks(who knew they saw Katrina). This is just one of the all-time classic Rock albums. You must remember back then they were called albums and they were on vinyl. You must not forget though what has come between the debut and 4! There was Led Zeppelin 2 - Whole Lotta Love, Heartbreaker, Bring it on Home, What Should and Never Be and the all-time sex song-the Lemon song. Plus Zep 3 - Since I Been Lovin You, Tangerine, Gallow's Pole and more. My favorite heavy rock band.

7. Smokin'/Humble Pie-Steve Marriott had won of the best voices in rock. 30 Day's in the Hole, Hot and Nasty, C'on Everybody, the Fixer, Your So Good for Me...They were the Best.

8 Tribute to Muddy Waters/Paul Rodgers-Nothing more needs to be said except Paul is another one of the Greatest singers of all-time. Free, Bad Co. and as of lately he did the last Queen tour. Blues are his roots and I love all of his music. If you are young Listen & Learn.

9.Harvest/Neil Young- One of my favorite folk artists that can also rock with the best of them. Old Man was my favorite because my Dad was so supportive and I was lucky...! A Man Needs a Maid another,There's a World w/the London Symphony, the Needle & the Damage Done, I have lost some friends too, and Words. Just a classic record!

10 Offering/Axe- Touring with OZZY 1982, and playin the Oakland Coliseum 18,000 people and not getting anything thrown at us, 30,000 Irvine Meadows same thing, OZZY said Teddy you have a smoke, Sharon doesn't want me smokin. Then he said you guy's have been on the tour now for 20 shows and no one has thrown anything at you, That shows you Rock. Then to Texas where the police surrounded our buses because the last time he was there he pissed on the Alamo, all worked out fine though and we kept going and Rockin...! From OZZY to Judas Priest, To Ted Nugent, To Kiss, To Cheap Trick & more. It was a Great year for AXE, wonderful people we met and Rock 'N Roll Party in the Streets made it to the 59th Song of the Year and Offering the 75th Album of the Year.

Well, those are my Top 10 Cd's of All-Time hope you enjoyed it! Remember "Keep on Rockin" and Teamwork makes the Dreamwork....Luv Ya, Teddy

7 Secrets To Shoot Video Like A Pro

Alot of us get inspired by movies to want to shoot great video with our video cameras - unfortunately there is a difference between want and being able to. Like photography, good videography requires a level of competence and artistic know-how. After all, there's more to shooting great footage than pressing the record button. This brings us to the 7 secrets to shoot video like a pro.

For good or bad, I learned the hard way how to shoot professionally. I'm not promising you'll get an oscar for your efforts but you'll avoid giving viewers that amateur-I-can't-hold-a-camera-steady look.

1. Be A Good Student

Just like any craft you need to know your tools. For example, if your filming your son's baseball game you need to increase the shutter speed to ensure your image is free of motion blur. If your shooting from a distance and you've zoomed to bring the subject closer you'll need to pay attention to the camera's focus and switch it to manual to avoid focus drift. It really comes down to reading the manual and learning the tools. At first it may seem daunting but if you tackle one concept at a time and apply yourself by shooting it will make sense and it will become second nature. To simplify things, I recommend keeping a cheat sheet handy if necessary.

2. Stay Prepared

Think of videography like camping, you always need a survival kit.

- Bring plenty of spare batteries - you never know when you'll need them.

- Extra blank tapes. The more quality footage you have the easier the editing process.

- A lens-cleaning cloth. You don't want to be stuck in a situation where you have a smudge and you have nothing safe to clean your glass with. This a situation where post-production will not help.

- Bring a tripod. Steady shots go along way in preventing motion sickness. You'll be surpised how much better your shots will look.

- A battery charger/power supply. Having the ability charge your batteries ensures minimal downtime and more content.

- Extension cords for long cable runs. You want to be prepared for the worst scenario. Often on jobs, I'll bust out the cables if a local receptacle is not available.

- Duct tape, for taping down the extension cord so people don't trip over it. You don't want a lawsuit on your hands.

- Lighting gear, lens filters, and microphones, and any other accessories you may need. These are your tools to quality videography. Unless your feeling lazy, don't leave home without them.

3. Say YES to a tripod

The majority of home videos end up looking shaky, which is a drag to watch. Even with a small investment of $30 on a tripod, your footage look will look professional and steady. Also, you'll have the ability to execute pans and zooms without trouble.

No tripod? Lean against a wall to minimize shakiness. OK, no wall you say? Putt your butt on the ground, bend your knees, and drop your elbows on them.

If your shooting an event where space is limited or you're on the constant go I recommend a monopod. These are a real lifesaver. Not only can you get rock steady shots, you occupy less space and can relocate in a matter of seconds.

4. Give me light

It doesn't matter how good your camera is. If you have crappy lighting, it will reflect (no pun intended) in your video. A quick solution to overcome lighting issues is to shoot outdoors preferably in the morning or late afternoon hours. Why? At these times of the day the light is less harsh and produces a more pleasant softer look on the video - no shadows over the eyes, squinting, or washed out skin tones.

If you must shoot indoors take notice of which way the light is directed in the room. Avoid shooting your foreground subjects close to bright windows behind them. You don't want your camera to expose for the background leaving your foreground subject dark. Certainly let as much light into the room as possible and try to have the light coming from behind you towards your subject. If the light levels are low, its good practice to disable autofocus or you will encounter problems as the camera attempts to focus properly.

5. Hi-Fi Audio

Many people don't notice good sound but they sure notice bad sound. Getting good sound does take some work but its do-able. The microphones built into most cameras are pretty basic and are not considered high-end. When your dealing with an uncontrollable environment it's always best to get as close as possible to the source as possible to ensure the cleanest recording. You must monitor your audio with headphones to ensure the best results.

6. Composition

Proper composition is everything when setting up a good shot. Professional videographers obey the "rule of thirds" and you should do the same. Imagine a tic-tac-toed board over your viewfinder. The lines interact in four spots. Your goal should be to frame the action using one or more of those spots.

Of course, art is subjective and you can break this rule if your feeling creative. But exercise restraint: you don't want to alienate your audience.

7. Shoot B-Roll

B-Roll is secondary footage that is used for cutaway shots to connect your primary shot. The cutaway of b-roll footage can also be used to hide unflattering shots or mistakes you may have made while shooting. If your filming a wedding, you might take shots of the church, the invitation, and the little bride and groom atop the cake. When its time to cut your movie, you mix in the footage to cover up mistakes and add variety.

There are no hard rules. Anything can become B-Roll. If you study television shows or news stories you'll see a constant use of B-Roll. It's basically the glue to connect and link scenes together. As you gain experience you will be able to visualize your edit and what shots you need before you even shoot. As the old saying goes, practice makes perfect!

Top Internet Marketing Firms

Firms that intend to use the Internet to generate business utilize the services of Internet marketing firms. By contacting these firms, companies are able to transmit information regarding their businesses globally and gain a wide clientele.

Current industry estimates put the total number of Internet marketing firms at over 10,000 the world over. User feedback is the parameter that is utilized to gauge the performance of these firms, and then they are ranked accordingly by market research firms.

The various strategies adopted by these Internet marketing firms are analyzed and then they are graded strategically. The grading is based on how these firms manage their pay per click links and how much business is generated using this resource.

Internet marketing firms are also graded on their link popularity. The mere presence of links is not sufficient; it is their popularity which determines whether or not users click them.

Internet marketing firms provide services like search engine optimization concepts, web writing, suggestions for increasing traffic, email marketing strategies, press release distribution services, blog marketing and optimization, competitive and keyword analysis, copywriting and content optimization, manual search directory and search engine submissions, link building campaigns, search engine inclusion with Yahoo and Google, sitemaps, search engine public relations strategy, press release optimization and pitching to the media, pay-per-click campaign management, and on-going performance reporting.

Search engine optimization is essential as it is only due to this that your URL will show up on the search results of someone browsing the Internet. Search engine optimization results in increased visibility, sales, and online ROI.

Kinetic Results, Texas; SEO Image, Inc., New York; Portent Interactive Washington; Bruce Clay, Inc., California; Telic Media, California; Prime Visibility, New York; TopRank Online Marketing, Minnesota; Increase Visibility, California; Submit Express California, and Neutralize, United Kingdom are a few of the top ranking Internet marketing companies according to a recent survey.

ATV Protective Gear

In some cases, ATV enthusiasts, new and more seasoned, might resist wearing ATV protective gear when riding. Some people don't like the heaviness of the gear. Other people don't like the way the gear looks. Still others believe they are capable enough to drive their ATVs without getting in an accident. Unfortunately, it does not matter how skilled you are on the ATV, or your previous track record. An accident could happen to anybody, at any time, and it is best to be prepared for the worst-case scenario. ATV accidents are common, and there is always a certain level of danger. But you can minimize that danger, and maximize your chances of walking away from an ATV accident, but wearing protective gear.

The first, and most important, part of your outfit is your helmet. There are many different types of helmets, but the safest are full-faced helmets with a face-shied. The face-shield protects the rider from harsh winds, bugs, flying debris, and of course, serious injury should the rider go over the front of the handle-bars, or should the ATV roll. The helmet should be the appropriate size for the person wearing it-that is children should not wear adult helmets-and it should fit securely without being too tight or too lose. It is best to measure the size of your head and then get a precise measurement of the helmet, rather than relying on general sizes.

The second part of your outfit is gloves and boots. Heavy duty gloves and boots will protect your hands and feet from the wind and flying debris, but it was also protect your tender skin from "road rash" should you have an accident. The third part of your outfit is your jacket. There are heavy jackets appropriate for cold climates or winter, and there are lighter jackets that are comfortable enough to wear in warm climates or in the summer. These coats will provide protection from the elements, from debris, and will also protect your arms, chest, and back in the case of an accident.

Restaurant Acoustics

Have you ever been inside of a crowded restaurant sitting at a table with your wife or girlfriend only to find out that you could not hear a word she was saying because the acoustics in the restaurant were so poor? Most restaurants employ hard surface areas throughout in order to easily keep the establishment clean and healthy. The problem with all the clean hard surfaces is that they reflect the sound. In other words, the sound bounces around the room making it difficult he understand what the person at your own table is saying, but instead clearly hearing the lady 5 tables away from you. Restaurant acoustics are generally horrible. Here you are taking the lady you love out for your anniversary and paying at least $50 per plate and you can't even carry on a conversation with her.

Many restaurants are losing business because they don't know the first thing about acoustics. There are many thing that restaurant owners and managers can do to make the room much more pleasant for their patrons. These dining areas need to be acoustically treated or absorbent materials are needed to absorb the reflective noise in the restaurant.

When furnishing a new restaurant, it is always best to add fabric covered chairs and booth seating because fabrics absorb the sound. The same goes for bar stools and lounge chairs and couches. Use fabric covered furnishings whenever possible.

Here's a handy trick for tuning up the acoustics in a restaurant. There is a product on the market now called Echoless Roll material. This is a bonded acoustical cotton roll material that has a black neutral fabric facing on one side. Not a very appealing look for an up scale restaurant, but here's the trick. Take your tables and chairs and glue this Echoless roll material to the bottoms of both the chairs and tables where none of the patrons will be able to see this material. The Echoless roll can also be glued to the underside of the bar and bar stools or to the underside of any of the furnishings in the establishment where noise reflection is an issue. This material strategically placed can actually reduce the amount of reflective noise by at least 50% to 65%. The more of it you are able to use in the restaurant, the better your sound absorption will be. You can dramatically lower reverb times and increase speech intelligibility to the point where a normal conversation can take place in a very crowded eatery.

Pros of Owning a Jeep Wrangler

When searching for your next car purchase, you might start to consider a Jeep Wrangler. Which is good! There are many reasons to purchase a Jeep Wrangler, and even though you might not be an off-roading enthusiast or an outdoors person, there are plenty of pros of owning a Jeep Wrangler.

The Jeep Wrangler handles well on all sorts of terrain, including pavement, icy pavement, and snow covered pavement. If live in an area that sees all sorts of weather systems, from blizzards to hail to thunder storms, then a Jeep Wrangler can be a very good choice. The other pros of owning a Jeep Wrangler include the size and weight of the vehicle. Jeep Wranglers are small enough that they can get into tight areas, including parking spots. Because there are so many Jeeps on the road, and Jeeps have been a part of American life for the past sixty years, the spare parts are plentiful and cheap. This makes repairs very simple, and you don't have to hunt around your area for any sort of specialty mechanic that'll charge an arm and a leg for hard-to-find parts. Along those lines, Jeeps are extremely durable, and they have a reputation for not breaking down. They also have a very high resale value, which means you're getting a very good value for your dollar, even if you buy a Jeep used.

Jeep Wranglers also have a very large range of options and aftermarket items for modification and customization. This means that one of the pros of owning a Jeep Wrangler is that you can customize it to reflect your personality, needs, and interests.

Shepherding and Discipleship - A 21st Century Redux?

Santa Cruz, California in the '70s teemed with alternative life-styles -- from flower-power hippies to punk, zen monasteries to hidden terrorist training camps for the Weathermen, Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA) and others. Living in this coastal community in the '70s exposed much of its population to continuous pressure to experiment with life-style alternatives. These alternatives certainly included religious experiments as well.

Across town from the Wharf, over towards the University of California (Santa Cruz), a nationally known and respected church leader had helped found one of Santa Cruz's alternative churches -- part of the national "Shepherding Movement". Known as "Mission Street Fellowship", it drew a couple a hundred or so young people -- both long-haired hippies and straight -- and served as the eye of the local spiritual "hurricane" of spiritual renewal attempts. In fact, one of its most infamous Bible teachers for a time, Lonnie Frisbie, eventually became one of the Jesus' People revival's most well-known "characters", leading meetings in streets and homes where miracles took place, people were healed and generally "impossible" things happened regularly!

What made this church "alternative" acceptable may have stemmed from the teachings of its founder, Bob Mumford. Along with four or five other nationally known Christian teachers (affectionately known as "The Florida Gang"), Mumford insisted that the Bible required every Christian to submit to church leaders. This meant trusting that God would use these men to guide, direct and instruct whichever Christians were completely submitted to them.

Why would people accept this kind of control? This spiritual movement had astonished the world. Thousands of California's rebellious youth -- inaccurately dismissed as "drugged-out hippies" -- experienced radical, personal transformations overnight into respected members of the public! The central cry of their lives changed from "sex, drugs and rock and roll" into "Jesus!"

Many of these new converts had (deliberately) never taken any sort of responsibility for themselves, much less others. From being despised as societal "drop-outs", "Jesus People" began renting (and sharing) properties, forming businesses, running halfway houses to meet the needs of street people and generally creating more positive community environments wherever they lived. Not that they had truly joined the Establishment, but certainly they were "well on the way"!

Many of these young, young new Believers faced an understandably difficult transition. Having repented from lives of intentional rebellion, now they pressed hard into following Jesus Christ. To some degree, the Shepherding Movement sprang from a seed in the heart of many of its supporters -- a seed of desire to go as far away from rebellion as seemed possible. Submitting one's daily life to the local church elders as unto the Lord offered a clear, straight-forward means of submitting one's life to Christ.

Granted, the "Mission Street" elders were very young (twenty-somethings) but their combined immaturities were astounding. A close friend and fellow-student at a local Bible college had become a cell-group leader within this church. In frequent conversations, my friend tried to persuade me to join them -- this new "move of God". This was the future of the Church!

But it disturbed me that these young, congregational "elders" (none of them older than 25!) literally told their "sheep" when and where they could move, if they could change jobs, how much to donate to the church, what they could do for entertainment (which essentially meant going to church every night) and other "spiritual instructions". One day, I remember feeling my friend and his fellow "shepherds" crossed a line when I found they told more than one couple whether they could or couldn't have a baby.

One Sunday evening while visiting "Mission Street", I listened to its head elder tell a story illustrating what "true submission" looked like. His wife "starred" in the account, demonstrating a "true heart of submission". He'd been working late one night (preparing his sermon) when he called into the other room and asked his wife to go get him a coke. Not realizing the lateness of the hour, he had no idea his wife had already gone to bed. But hearing him call, she got up to find there were no sodas left in the fridge. Without discussing it with her husband, she got dressed again to walk several blocks to an all night market, bought a soda, and brought it home to him.

Personally, I felt disgusted at the servile attitude the young elder propagated. To me, the mature response on the part of the wife would be to pop her head into her husband's study and say, "Hon -- there doesn't seem to be any soda left in the fridge. Do you want me to get dressed and go buy you a coke?" That seemed a simple and respectful way for a husband and wife to relate.

But worse than that, the preacher intended the people to get the message that they needed to have this same "submitted heart" toward their church leaders as well. His message wasn't simply about "wives submit", but "all of you submit".

The Shepherding Movement pretty much died out in the '80s due to ridiculous excesses on the part of its leaders. But now, years later, I hear people again talking about "shepherding", "discipleship", "spiritual covering" and "submission". And it's true -- the Bible does tell Believers to "obey those who rule over you, and submit yourselves." [Hebrews 13.17] But this command has nothing to do with how "submission" is typically understood in our culture.

In most cultures, there is a very strong association between "submission" and "control". But the book of Hebrews wasn't written to our culture, but to a Mediterranean society 2,000 years ago! The intent of the words "obey", "rule" and "submit" (translated from the Greek) are different than the ones used in English.

The word "obey" (peitho) means "to trust, have confidence" in your leaders. The word "rule" (hegeomai) refers to a leader or person who has influence over others. And "submit" (peitho) means to listen to, to allow yourself to be persuaded.

When you put these three terms together, there's no sense of subjection (personal or "spiritual") or of control. The sense is more moderate, agreeable, then is implied by a chain-of-command mentality. The role of the true, spiritual leader is never to order or command, but instead to invite, persuade and influence.

In this new season of church people talking again about "shepherding", "discipleship", "spiritual covering" and "submission", every Believer must determine for themselves and their families, the difference between "submission" and "subjection". James 3.17 says that the wisdom which is from Heaven "is first holy, then gentle, readily giving way in argument, full of peace and mercy."

Here then, is the rule in respect to true, spiritual submission:

Spiritual submission is not control, but influence;

Spiritual submission is you, submitting yourself, to influence, never to control.

Celebrate the Best of the Past With a Golden Oldies Party Feast

The Golden Oldies was a fun era balanced with good times and responsibilities. When thinking of the Golden Oldies, music from the fifties and sixties always comes to mind. Whether it is Elvis Presley or the Fifth Dimension, carefree songs are always noted throughout this time period.

Planning a menu for a Golden Oldies party can be fun, especially when you name the dishes to mesh with the theme. Try having At The Hop Hamburgers, Blue Velvet Cupcakes, California Dreaming Rolls, and Hound Dog Punch.

To make California Dreaming Rolls at the Golden Oldies party gather 1 small handful of Sushi Rice,½ sheet Nori, some Crab meat, some Avocado, some Cucumber, and some Cream Cheese. The rest is pretty simple after the rice has been made. Cover the bamboo mat in plastic wrap and cut a piece of Nori (seaweed/algae) in two. Dice some avocado, cucumber and cream cheese. Next, place the ½ nori sheet at the end (toward you) of the mat. Spread a small handful of sushi rice on the nori sheet, leaving a ¼ of an inch on either side. Shake on some sesame seeds. Flip the whole thing over and place chopped avocado, cucumber and crab meat along the middle of the roll. Roll gently with even pressure. Cut roll in half. Align the 2 halves and cut twice into 6 even pieces. Add a dab of wasabi, some soy sauce, and your appetizer is ready to be served.

Celebrate fun with a Golden Oldies party, make sure to have plenty of juke box favorite on had so the guests can twist the night away.

Things to Do With Your Daughter

It is sometimes not easy to slow down from our busy lives to figure out what would be a fun day of activities with our kids. It may be particularly difficult for fathers to figure out what to do with their daughters. Well it is pretty easy to ask them but sometimes they don't know either and you end up just hanging out, which by the way, is not bad at all either as long as they are getting your full attention. The goal is to build your relationship with your daughter and to build a bridge between the two of you at a young age. This "bridge" can stand for a long time and can be used as a foundation of support for her in later years.

Depending on the age of your daughter, there are several easy and inexpensive ways to have a great time with your daughter. You will be surprised at what a young age your daughter can have fun with many of these activities. They don't have to last all day but only a couple of hours or so to be an effective relationship building experience.

One of the best days I have ever had with my daughter was to take her to the beach. One of our local beaches has a pier and an amusement park it was a great day full of many different activities. We have had other fun days, bowling, ice skating, snow skiing, playing soccer, swimming and riding bikes at the local park.

Sometimes different than boys, girls love to learn new things and they will concentrate for a long time trying to learn new things. I enjoy sitting down and teaching my daughters how to play a game like pool or chess. I have been teaching my youngest daughter to play chess. The lessons go on for months but each time we sit down we review the previous lesson and start with a new game and always naming the pieces and the way each of them can move before beginning our game. I always help them with their game and always let them win a few and save a few pieces as we play.

When teaching your young daughter to play a game, it is best to let her win some and lose some, don't ever let her win every time, unless of course, she is really beating you.

How about bowling? An older pastime that is virtually non-existent in California, it is a lot of fun for kids to play this game. They have children's "rails" that they can pull up so every ball they, or you, bowl does not go in the gutter. The rails allow the balls to bounce off and continue down the alley to eventually hit the pins. They knock some down with every single roll and they have a lot of fun doing it. It is inexpensive and requires you to get away from the house to do it, which is always an adventure for the younger kids.

Hiking in the mountains or even the local parks can also be a great adventure with your children. When I hike with my kids we like to talk about the animals and what it would be like to have to live in the wilderness with nothing. Their imaginations are so great that they can come up with a ton of interesting topics to discuss on their own while hiking. Hiking is great because it gives you a lot of time to talk and interact with your children. How about counting the rings on a tree or hugging a tree and talking about it being alive and how it grows. There are so many things that you can teach your children on a trip to the hills.

Whatever you decide to do with your daughter, or your son, be sure to give them your full attention. No cell phones or texting while you are with them. Try to think of looking at the world through their eyes while you are with them and you will have a lot more fun yourself.

How To Choose The Proper Tires For Your New Hybrid Car

You've decided to defy convention and get yourself a hybrid car. But don't think that the only advantage associated with such a decision is the ability to help keep the environment clean. While it is true hybrid cars are excellent for such things, they also provide another benefit... low-rolling resistance tires. What are low-rolling resistance tires? Low-rolling resistance tires are a type of tire that refers to the manner in which the tire rolls. In comparison to traditional tires, low-rolling tires roll with greater ease. This allows the tire to function with minimal amounts of energy. The result is greater overall tire life as well as better traction, especially for drivers that tend to be slower and more cautious on the road.

How do manufacturers go about designing the perfect low-rolling resistance tire? Well, first they look into the best methods of designing the general tread. This process not only helps in maximizing the potential of the low-rolling resistance tire, but it can also help establish the company's brand, since each manufacturer will use a different tread. After that, manufacturers look into what materials they are going to use. Usually, the best ones will be those that are light yet strong. This combination allows the low-rolling resistance tire to run without one worrying too much about the air pressure from within them. In fact, low-rolling resistance tires can go for up to 50 miles without a change in their initial air pressure. When you have low-rolling resistance tires, you can forget having to deal with jacks or other tire-changing tools, since these types of tires don't get flat as easily.

Additionally, low-rolling resistance tires can help you save on your gas bill. This is because they increase the overall efficiency of your vehicle, including how it runs. And when there's a smoother run, less fuel is needed to keep the vehicle operating. In fact, low-rolling resistance tires are so useful in helping to conserve gas most consumers will save as much as 6 percent in gas-related expenses. Indeed, any extra money that may have to be spent to obtain the low-rolling resistance tires will be gotten back ten-fold when it's time to refuel the car.

Yet, despite all of these tremendous advantages, low-rolling resistance tires won't be for everyone. For example, although there are many that prefer the feel they offer, there are some that think it hinders them from being able to drive faster. So, drivers that like to speed up at every opportunity may want to consider either changing their driving style or investing in another type of tires.

However, it should be noted where there might come a time where all tires work in the same manner as low-rolling resistance ones. For example, consider recent legislation in California, where replacement tires must work in a manner that is as efficient as tires on newer vehicles. And, at least for that state, many of these new tires are low-rolling resistance. So, there's an unspoken yet clearly communicated incentive to try and slowly but surely get people more used to low-rolling resistance tire technology.

The Absolute Best Canvas Canopy

When you need to protect certain items, or provide shade for any reason, you can rely on a canvas canopy to give you the ultimate in style as well as practicality and durability.

The canvas canopies are usually made for fitting onto the back of a pick up truck, and they have side canvas roll ups with Velcro in place.

One of the main things about a canvas canopy is that it is used for camping and hiking. The dust and bugs out there can be very irritating and your contents will be better off kept away from them.

The reason that canvas is used for camping is that it is very think and strong to withstand any type of weather or off-road conditions. It also camouflages the dirt and dust.

A canvas canopy can be various shades of beige, brown, green, and red which means that there will be one to suit everyone.

A canvas canopy for a car is made almost the same way as one for a caravan. The sides roll up and a mesh mosquito wire is over the windows. The rear has a window and the inside roof has a light in it.

These are all available online so you should take a look at the many websites that you can use to purchase a canvas canopy for your pickup or freestanding needs.

The canvas canopy [http://www.outdoorcanopytents.com/articles/canvas-canopy.htm] is also similar to a canopy tent. It can be a freestanding overhead canopy that can be used to give shade over foods and people when they want to relax outdoors. The canvas is very hard wearing so you will have no reason to want to buy another one any time soon.

You can wash the canopy off with a hose pip, leave it in the rain, or do wherever you like to it and it will not break, or disappoint.

Where To Find A Canvas Canopy

The canvas canopy will have legs made from galvanize steel to prevent rust and will have all of the best, top quality accessories and materials. You can find many of these cheaply online and you will be able to order them over a secure internet connection and payment method. It will then be shipped to you.

The set up of tents and canvas canopies is not hard at all. No tools are required and the assembly is easy and quick. You can then take it down again if you move or if you want to take it with you on vacation somewhere outdoors.

When you are trying to select the most appropriate canvas canopy for your needs you can try to find the best ones online and you can find many reputable canvas canopy companies just by looking at their experience and any reviews. Most people that enjoy camping will have a canvas canopy on their pickup along with other canvas accessories.

The different canvas canopies will have windows, sides, zips, and mesh coverings for the highest protection from unwanted bugs. So give one of the websites a try.

You are sure to find a canvas canopy that will last a lifetime and be used for anything like parking cars under, storing foods and equipment when outdoors, for changing areas for film shoots, on pickups, for sleeping in instead of a tent, or for a party.

Simple Rocket Experiments You Can Share With Your Homeschool Kids

For every action, there is equal and opposite reaction. If you blow up a balloon and let it go (without tying the end), the air in the balloon goes in one direction and the balloon itself goes the opposite way. Rockets use this same principle. The thrust going out the back end pushes the rocket forward.

The rockets we're about to build rely on generating enough pressure and releasing that pressure very quickly. You will generate pressure by pumping in air or through chemical reactions (which generate gaseous products).

Let's get started!

Seltzer Rockets: Place an Alka-Seltzer tablet in a white Fuji film canister (black Kodak canisters won't work) and fill one-third with water. Working quickly, cap it and invert it on the sidewalk. Stand back... POP! You'll find there's an optimal water level for maximum height. If you work fast, you can get about four launches from one tablet. What happens if you try two tablets at once?

Paper Blow-Gun Rockets: Make a very long straw by joining two straws with tape. Roll an 8½x11" sheet of paper into a long tube and tape shut (younger kids can roll the paper around a dowel to help). Cut triangle fins out of index cards and hot glue onto one end of the rocket. To make the nosecone, cut a circle out of paper. You can trace the inner diameter of masking tape roll to get a good circle. To make a flat circle into a 3D cone, begin to cut the circle in half, but stop cutting when you get to the center. Slide one flap over the other to form a (nose)cone and tape shut. Pile a lot of glue inside the cone and add the long straw and wait to dry. Slip the straw inside the tube and seal the nosecone to the rocket body. When dry, blow into your straw to check for leaks. It should be impossible to blow through. If you have a leak, go back and fix it now. Otherwise, slip over the metal tube and blow hard. If you have one, apply a nozzle from an air tank or compressor to blast these rockets hundred of feet in the air! If your straws come loose, simply cut the rocket body just below the nosecone and rebuild the straw-cone assembly, fastening in place when ready.

Slingshot Rockets Punch a small hole in the bottom of a black Kodak film canister. Chain 5 rubber bands together and push one end of the rubber band chain through the hole from the outside, catching it with a paper clip inside so it can't slip back through the opening (like a cotter pin). Hot glue the canister into one end of a 6" piece of ¾" foam pipe insulation and tape the circumference with a few wraps of duct tape. The rubber bands should be hanging out of the foam pipe. Attach triangular foam fins with hot glue to the opposite end. To launch, hook the rubber band over your thumb, pull back, and release!

Puff Rockets: Grab a clean, empty shampoo or lotion bottle. Make sure the bottle you choose gives you a good puff of air out the top cap when you squeeze it. You'll also need two straws, one slightly smaller than the other. And a small piece of foam. Insert the smaller straw into the hole in the cap. If you have trouble, ream out the hole or just take off the cap and seal the connection with a lump of clay or a lot of hot glue. Insert a small bit of foam into one end of the larger straw. Slide the larger straw (your rocket) onto the smaller straw (your launcher). Squeeze the bottle hard! POOF! Which bottles work best? Does straw length matter? (We had one rocket that cleared 25 feet.)

Micro Paper Rockets: Spiral-wrap a thin strip of paper around and along the length of a wood pencil and tape to secure (You can alternately use a naked straw instead of making your own rocket body from paper, but then you'll need a slightly smaller launch tube straw.) Hot glue triangular fins made from an index card to one end. Fold the opposite end over twice and secure with a ring of tape to make a nose. Insert straw into the rocket body and blow hard!

How To Get A Rebate for Using Alternative Energy in Illinois

Alternative Energy is all the rage after the State of the Union speech given by President Bush. If you live in Illinois, you should know there are already rebate programs available.

How To Get A Rebate for Using Alternative Energy in Illinois

Rebates for using alternative energy platforms are handled under the Renewable Energy Resources Program. The program is designed to motivate Illinois residents to use alternative energy by providing financial incentives in the form of rebates for those that modify their energy use.

The Renewable Energy Resources Program has been around for awhile, but new regulations went into effect on January 1, 2006. Under the regulations, rebates for going solar may now be as high as $10,000 for eligible solar thermal systems and up to 30 percent of the cost of solar panel systems. These new rebates, however, have a finite life span. You must apply for either or both of them by April 30, 2006.

To get in on these healthy rebates, there are a few requirements you must meet. First of all, you must be eligible. Eligible parties included individuals, businesses, schools, non-profits, and institutions of higher learning. You must also be a customer of utility company, meaning you can not be an off-grid energy residence or structure since the rebates are designed to move utility customers to non-utility energy sources.

Solar panels systems are typically used to produce electricity. If you are going with a solar panel system, the requirements are very simple. The system must be approved by Underwriters Laboratories, a fairly common certification throughout the solar industry. The system must also have a rated capacity of 800 watts for production.

Solar-thermal systems are used to produce heat, often in the form of hot water. If you are going with a solar thermal system for your alternative energy needs, it must be approved by the Solar Rating and Certification Corporation or similar certification. The system must produce at least 50,000 BTUs a day or have at least 60 square feet of collectors. Put in simple terms, you need to have roughly a system measuring 8 x 8 feet. If you are using the system for a pool, you only get the rebate if the pool is available to the public for regular use.

While President Bush surprised many by highlighting alternative energy platforms in his recent speech. Alas, Illinois was already heading down that road.

Garage Door

If you've ever driven through Levittown, Long Island, you've seen the paradigm of post-World War II housing. Designed for the young parents who were giving birth to the baby boom generation, Levittown houses were built in accordance with the principles of pre-fabricated housing constructed for servicemen, but they incorporated the "must-haves" of post-war life: big yards, modern appliances, a television antenna, and other conveniences. Promotional photos for Levittown over a period of years show that the evolution of the garage followed major trends in the changing American lifestyle.

The earliest house plans from the 1940s show boxy, Cape Cod-style homes with a living room, dining room, bath, and two bedrooms. There were no driveways: the single car owned by most families was parked on the street. By 1950, the company brochure offered five houses in a modified Cape Cod/Ranch style, each with a driveway leading to a single attached carport. And in the sister suburb of Levittown, PA, in 1954, the developers presented a variety of homes that incorporated the latest essential in home design - an enclosed garage.

Today, if you drive through even the most moderate suburban neighborhood, you're likely to see a gaping, two- or three-car garage opening directly onto the street, with living quarters sprawling behind and above. The garage has become the façade of the modern American home.

The growth in the importance of the garage has coincided with the presence of more and more cars in the typical American family. When Henry Ford lowered the price of his Model T so that "the workers who build them can afford to buy them," the option of owning an automobile became a reality for families of modest means, and through the decades from 1910 to 1930 car ownership grew steadily.

Auto sales fell as World War II limited both income and the availability of raw materials, but millions more women learned to drive as they filled jobs previously held by servicemen. By the time the subdivision building boom began shortly after the war, nearly any young couple could afford a house for $8,000 and an $800-dollar station wagon. Typically, after driving her husband to the commuter train station, the housewife used the car to shop and run errands. (African American and other minority families, including Jews in many suburbs, were shut out of housing opportunities by restrictive covenants in the North and Jim Crow laws in the South. But that's another story.)

Soon, though, a single car wasn't enough: Dad wanted the family car, and Mom needed her own. By the 1960s, it was not uncommon for a teen to get a vehicle - often a grandparent's old car - for his 16th birthday. Instead of parking on the street or under a single carport, a family now needed at least a double garage plus room to park a third or even fourth vehicle. Today, in addition to a garage for two cars (or, more likely, one car plus an attic's worth of clutter), many suburban and rural homes include an additional, oversized garage for the RV.

Garage doors have changed, too. The earliest ones in the late 19th century were simply barn doors that allowed a farmer to bring a horse-drawn buggy into the garage for loading and unloading or storage out of the weather. They hinged outward or rolled sideways on steel tracks like a sliding closet door and were used for mechanized vehicles - tractors, cars, and trucks - as they came into wider use. Carriage houses, originally built by the wealthy for horses and carriages, also began to hold automobiles.

By the early 1920s, as more and more middle-class families could afford Model Ts, a modified version of the garage appeared. Usually a small shed (often only eight or ten feet wide), the garage wasn't wide enough for a sliding door. A single hinged door would be too heavy and ungainly to move, so a split, hinged door, each half three or four feet wide and seven to eight feet tall, was used instead. These old wooden doors can still be seen in rural areas; they often look homemade, with small windowpanes and one-by-six-inch diagonal cross-braces across the front. But their weight put great stress on hinges, screws, and the frame, and, when there was snow on the ground, it had to be shoveled out of the way before the doors could swing open.

The invention of the articulated (folding) door was the first real innovation in garage doors. A door split into hinged vertical sections could slide or roll back into the garage itself. In 1921, Mr. C. G. Johnson designed an overhead garage door with horizontal articulation. Lifted from the bottom, the door rolled up and out of the way, each section leveling out as it followed the curve of parallel steel tracks. Five years later Johnson invented the electric opener, to assist people without the strength to raise the heavy door. Johnson's company became the Overhead Door Corporation, still a leading manufacturer of garage doors.

Later developments included the slab door raised on a strong track, and doors using lightweight materials, like Styrofoam-insulated steel, and steel alloys and fiberglass that roll into a compact space - the roll-down security doors seen at many businesses today.

Along with changes in technology came changes in style. As garages were gradually incorporated into houses - that is, going from a separate building to an attached one to part of the structure itself - the look and palette of garage doors evolved. No longer limited to the red-stained barn-door model or the white paint of early 20th-century design, they began to echo French Provincial, English Manor, Colonial, and California Ranch houses, among other popular architectural styles.

The modern garage, far from being an outbuilding or an afterthought, is as much a part of the typical American home as a family room and kitchen. And, in accordance with that status, garage doors today come in all the materials and styles favored by homeowners: traditional wood - with or without glass inserts and with or without resin impregnation - articulated steel and alloys, fiberglass, vinyl coatings, and aluminum.
