Jo's Kitchen 101 : California Maki

I wanted to do something new for the New Year since I felt I was being lazy during the holidays. Made this video especially for Mars, so dear if you're watching this haha then watch. To the people out there, this is the first time in a long time that I made California Maki, and as evidenced, my knife was either not sharp enough or the rice was just too sticky.

Market Concept Testing - Guerrilla Style

Marketing of new products and services is vital to most businesses. Many companies are unaware that fast, cost-insurgency techniques to test market concept can be easily replaced laborious research, saves time and money in the process.

A simple model of strategic thinking

In order to test a new concept to market, you need one, right? Use this simple drag, intuitive model approach to understand the market dynamics that will be considered. At first you simply work through the model applying what you already know or strongly suspect is true about the market. Then you go back and support each and every assumption you're holding with market data.

- What are the trends in my industry?
- What's driving these trends?
- What are we currently doing about the trends?
- What are our competitors doing about the trends?
- What could we be doing about the trends to increase our profits?

During this process you're squarely in the analytical phase of marketing. You're creating ties between your idea and a market that will welcome or reject it. Do your work carefully at this stage or you'll wind up with every marketer's nightmare...a product or service that's an answer to a question nobody's asked!

Collecting Unbiased Customer Data
There are a couple of ways to approach this task. It's recommended that you use both methods so that your information will be balanced between primary (straight from the client) and secondary (Expert Opinion). The goal here is to understand clearly your WOW! and how do you prove it.

The first thing to understand what (and many marketers) is that enterprise is a social process. This means that to do so successfully, you will spend most of the time dialogue with people ... not noodling around on the Internet. If the thought of you this fear resulted in good company. Most people do not taste, but conversations with strangersbite successful people in almost all professions only the bullet and do it in any way.

Step 1: The Internet section
For a bridgehead, and not a double effort, spend about 10% of the time you have allocated for this research project the Internet. The goal is to provide a basic understanding of available information on the latest offers and replaced in gaining market space. We want to understand the marketing and sales channels. In particular, you should knowsubstitute choices your prospects could make instead of buying your product. It's good to look at the whole chessboard, not just the squares immediately surrounding your next-move.

At this stage we're looking for available industry reports and similar expert analysis of:

• What are the trends in my industry?
• What's driving these trends?
• What are our competitors doing about the trends?

You'll find out what's available by doing these searches:

1. [industry name] or [product/service] or [major competitor], financial analysts
2. [industry name] or [product/service] or [major competitor], market research
3. [industry name] or [product/service] or [major competitor], Hoover's
4. [industry name] or [product/service] or [major competitor], [name of local newspaper]
5. [industry name] or [product/service] or [major competitor], business news
6. [industry name] or [product/service] or [major competitor], Industry News
Seventh [] The name of the industrial product or [/] services and [] main competitor, industry experts
8th Query were similar to your favorite social media where such information is not received by search engines.

If something has been written on, pod casts, YouTube'd, tweeted, blogs or discussion at a conference, you can find with this research. Viewpoints, to find and put each piece of key information in the model's five-point strategy planning, weusing. Now you'll see a shape starting to form around your strategy model.

Step 2: Create A Discussion Guideline
This is what you will use as a guideline in talking with potential purchasers of your market concept. In essence this is the heart and soul of your project. The care and accuracy you put into this step will determine whether your market concept test results are accurate.

These are the objectives:

1. Understand whether your WOW! is really a WOW!
2. Understand Industry trends and purchasing related to your concept of market ... and what is driving these trends.
Ask a third view on growth opportunities for your company or department.

We recommend structuring your guide so that the results in a discussion. People tend to relax and talk more freely about your approach to the market, and alternatives if you're not reading the questions in the letter as a market study. Sketch of five key areas of information. Thiscould include:

• What do you think of the concept I presented?
• them to steer in the direction of their thoughts on the advantages and disadvantages.
• Ask them what is even better.
• What are the substitutes or alternatives to do-it-yourself-and in-house solution?
• How, when and where you'd like to receive information on new products and services like these?
• Digital
• traditional (print ads, trade shows, sales, etc.)
• Colleagues, Friends & Family
• Where and how you'd like something like this concept acquire market?
• Steer them toward what is now the perfect place for them, not only when alternatives are available.
• Check any competitive advantage they can get you're looking for.
• concepts would influence how funding for their purchase decision?
• Who is the final decision maker and who else is involved in a purchase decision? Refer to noteson complex sales and remember that large consumer purchases can often involve multiple decision makers and influencers.

It is critical that you not approach this exercise with pre-conceived notions of what your company can or can't do. You simply want to visualize the best possible purchasing scenario for your new market concept. You can parse internal strengths and weaknesses later. Do not base a go/no-go decision on your weaknesses!

You may think of many other categories of Questions. Remember that most people have limited time with them for 15-30 minutes so as to maintain the low number of categories, and focus on going deep in each category. You can always change in different categories of subsequent discussions with various people. Even after three or four calls, you have a much clearer idea of which categories of information are most suitable for your purposes.

Step 3: Create a list of potential customers
The next one will interact directly with your market. This is a hugely valuable exercise for product managers, marketing managers and marketing leaders. You'll learn more about your market concept in a day of doing this than just about anything else you might choose to do, including conjoint analysis and focus groups.

The objectives for this stage are:

• understand who holds the knowledge you need
• understand the role each influencer will play in a complex sale
• understand where, when, how and from whom they get their Decision-influencing information

People should keep talking to one or more of the following roles:

• Decision makers
• Influence
• Approver
• User
• Deal Killer

Some products and services, including consumer goods and B2B products cost less than $ 1,000, you'll just talk to decision makers. For most other products and services to decision-makers and one or more other types of buyers will speak. IfYou do not know the mechanics of a complex sale you need a pause up to reach the project. Just do a search on a "complex sale" and you'll find what you need to know. This is critical for B2B and high-end or more consumer goods and complex services.

Your goal is to at least 100 people who have a direct influence on the purchase of this speech for you free market approach. If you try an approach to consumption (eg tax software are preparing to start)Speaking with people in your circle of influence even friends, family, colleagues and professional contacts. Qualify your research participants, who prepares his taxes and, if a product based software is used. Once the list and their phone numbers you're ready to go to Step 3.

If you test a concept of a B2B market directly to companies that are selling your products or services. Might have some contactthese companies, but spends most of his time talking to people who do not know. Be careful on your mission and never dressed like a student seeking a thesis or project. Just be yourself and describe what you do, honest.

If you start to "cold call" a society where you can get a foothold. If your market approach is a desire new and better alternative to traditional enterprise resource planning systems in manufacturing companies of medium size, most likelytalking to people in logistics, purchasing, operations and accounting. Go to the company's website and list the names of key people in those functions if they're identified. Then call the main number or department number, if listed, and ask to speak to that person. You may get through or you may not. Regardless of whom you talk with, even if it's the main switchboard operator, just give him/her your 25 word elevator pitch on what you're doing and ask who they'd recommend speaking with.

You will find that after calling three or four companies your comfort level will rise dramatically and you'll start getting through more often to people who have the information you need.

Summary
This sounds like odd work for marketing people doesn't it? However the advantages of this approach are many.

First, it gets marketing people immersed in the marketplace. This is far better than the superficial practice of having marketing people shadow a sales person for a day or two once a year.

Secondly, there are marketing people have an affinity for the role of the sales team. It helps you understand your own, so that in turn can work with vendors to develop strategies to overcome resistance and denial.

Thirdly, there are people still trust marketing and much more enthusiasm for the introduction of new concepts if they found the market dynamics and customer habits and practices. This confidence is spreading to other sectors of society, giving the marketing and product teams more support than they would have otherwise.

So yes, it's a truly different approach but it's highly effective and takes a lot less time and money than traditional market research.

Case Study
A startup company in California has a new market concept for virus protection solutions for iApp (applets for Apple's iPhones) vendors. This startup is reluctant to spend $50-100K on formal market research so they've decided to do the project in-house.

They plan to assess the current competitive landscape for iApp virus protection by:
• Conducting a search for iApp virus protection vendors, if any
• Interviewing a small number of current iApp creators
o Do the trends they're seeing suggest a market opportunity for our concept?
o What do they know about current solutions on the market?
o How would our offering solve a current problem or pain point better than other offerings?
o What would they pay to solve that problem or pain point?
o What level of disruption or complexity can the organization handle for installation and testing?

Next, the startup will assess current substitutes for their concept. They'll do this by conducting a search and gathering product specifications, distribution models and other key information for each of their potential competitors. Some of this information they will already have from collecting customer data from the internet and other resources they be used. The rest must go after the same techniques used to collect information. These are some possible results from their efforts:

• The new concept of market adjustments would feature
• The new market-oriented approach would only IAPP Creator
• Do not lean heavily on digital marketing, rather than traditional marketing
• payment of a utility pricing model (as used) that would be a strategic advantage
• Onewould guarantee them a strategic advantage
• acquisitions would not be a source of competitive advantage in the near future

The team now has enough information to make a go or no-go decision. If there is a "go" The next step is to make sure there are a lot of money in the bank or come in to finance the development and marketing. Before software programmers to create in step, but the team has a marketing requirements document and a process for commercial release to ensure that theyrun out of money before sales revenue kicks in.

The Fiscal Crisis in California

California's financial problems have been front and center in the media of late. This month, its credit rating was cut to the low end of investment grade. Facing insolvency, Governor Schwarzenegger and legislators have undertaken drastic action - selling off state assets, cutting the state's university budget by 20 percent and releasing 27,000 inmates from prison. Already the state has given mandatory furloughs of three days a month to its 243,000 state employees. What is the impact on California's crisis on the rest of the nation? What about the state's municipal bondholders? Will Washington DC have to bail out the nation's largest state? This edition of the newsletter will examine these questions and try to provide some helpful guidance.

Current State of Affairs

California now carries the lowest credit rating of the fifty states. In the current fiscal year of 2009-2010, its budget deficit was expected to be $24 to $28 billion. This is what prompted the recent marathon session of the state legislature. The state's general fund budget is about $100 billion. The prospective deficit was large both in absolute and in relative terms.

As recently as Fiscal 1998-99, the state's budget was in balance. A number of reasons have been put forth to explain the state's ensuing misfortune. All have some merit.

The state's tax structure is a contributory factor. Voters approved proposition 13 some 30 years ago placing severe limits on property tax increases. Consequently, the state has come to rely more and more on its rather large income tax. Unlike property taxes, income tax receipts tend to follow a boom and bust cycle along with the economy. During the good times, political pressure is applied by the state's powerful special interests to ramp up benefits. During bad times, there is less wiggle room to reduce expenditures as revenues plummet.

Case in point: California's state legislature passed SB 400 in 1999 that increased the pensions of state police officers by 50%! The same bill substantially upgraded the pensions and survivor benefits of other state employee Now, ten years later, the governor tried unsuccessfully to roll pension benefits to pre 1999 levels back for new hires.

The state's constitution has been an impediment to fiscal responsibility. One problem is the requirement that a two-thirds vote of the California legislature is needed to pass the state's budget and tax increases. There are only a handful of states that require a supermajority. Another problem with California law is the reliance on ballot initiatives to amend its constitution or statutes. These have become ubiquitous in recent years and are typically referred to as "propositions". Not surprisingly, the popular vote has consistently supported an expansion of services without a commensurate increase in taxes. Direct democracy sounds good in theory but its practice invites deficit spending.

On July 20th, lawmakers approved a budget plan that should close the deficit this fiscal year. It includes spending cuts amounting to 60% of the deficit with the balance financed with short term debt. While some of the cuts were accomplished with accounting gimmicks, most of the state's residents will be impacted by either a reduction in services or an increase in user fees.

California's Municipal Bonds

For municipal bondholders, the events of the past several months have raised troubling questions. Could the state of California default on its debt and what would the spillover effects on local California bonds be?

The good news is that California's bondholders are actually senior creditors. Proposition 98, passed in 1988, mandated that the state allocate 40 percent of its general fund to public elementary and high schools as well as community colleges. Roughly another 5% of education spending is also guaranteed by the state's constitution. This commitment is senior to the claims of bondholders. However, the state's bondholders are next in line. Today payments to those bondholders account for another 5% of the general fund as there are about $59 billion outstanding. Below the bondholders contributions. Some very key stakeholders must suffer before the state fails to pay its debt service. Unlike corporations or municipalities, the states cannot file for bankruptcy in an attempt to reorganize their debt obligations. Moreover, California needs continuous unfettered access to the credit markets to fund ongoing infrastructure projects and to cover short term seasonal cash flows.

What about the spillover effect on local issuers of tax-exempt bonds within California? Different local jurisdictions have varying levels of reliance on state funding. School districts and counties are among the most dependent. Most general obligation bonds are secured by local property taxes - a source of revenue that is comparatively stable. While municipalities can declare bankruptcy, they have been loathe to do. The relevant precedents indicate that bondholders are made whole regardless of the financial woe of the local issuer. Orange County CA filed for bankruptcy in 1994 but did not miss any bond payments. The City of Vallejo CA filed for bankruptcy more recently but has thus far continued to service its debt.

In fact, the default rates nationwide for municipal bonds are extremely low. According to Moody's, the default rate has averaged 0.01% per year since 1970. The average recovery rate for defaulted muni bonds was 60% compared to 40% for corporate bonds. And even during the Great Depression, the average annual default rate was 1.8%, with 97% of the defaulted principal eventually recovered.

There are additional risk factors today. Unfunded pension liabilities and infrastructure projects place a greater strain on state and local governments. However, most tax-exempt bonds are fairly senior in the credit structure of the issuer. And access to credit is essential for any public enterprise.

Bond markets have long memories. Any government defaulting on its debt would lose access to the capital markets for years. And, even then, the credit rating of its next issue would be so low that heightened borrowing costs would swamp any short term relief offered by reneging on payments in a time of crisis.

A Federal Bailout?

Governor Schwarzenegger has spent a good deal of time in Washington DC in 2009. There has been speculation that the Federal Government will bail out its largest state. In fact, Washington DC has already gone a long way to shore up the state and local bond markets. Of the nearly $800 billion federal stimulus money authorized in February 2009, about $135 billion was earmarked for the municipal bond issuers. The state of California has received at least $6 billion in direct transfers from Washington under the stimulus.

That same stimulus package authorized municipal issuers to issue "Build America Bonds" (BABs) to repair infrastructure. The federally taxable bonds offer a subsidy to issuers of 35 percent on their interest costs. Effectively, this program opens up municipal finance to potential investors that are already tax-exempt - thereby adding a new set of lenders to troubled local borrowers.

Federal tax dollars are hard at work today in supporting the finances of municipal issuers. But that is different rom an explicit bailout of a sovereign state. No state has defaulted in modern times. It's hard to imagine the consequences of default in today's credit markets.

One major consideration of any effort directed towards California is the potential domino effect on other state governments. California is hardly alone. A report from the National Conference on State Legislatures says that, collectively, states faced $142.6 billion in deficits for the 2009-10 fiscal year and many already are seeing signs that the total could grow.

There is a moral hazard to any federal bailout of California. Where does it stop? Wouldn't every state and municipality cut corners to deliver services to its constituents if it knew that the Federal Reserve would print the money to rescue it? California may facing similar travails a year from now. It will be interesting to see what measures, if any, Washington DC offers.

Types of Skateboards - Short and Longboards Explained

If you're into skateboarding, you're obviously familiar with the standard short skateboard, but have you ever seen someone ride a longboard? Other than the difference in length, I bet you wonder how these two types of boards are different. Keep reading to learn the similarities and differences of the skateboard and the longboard.

A longboard is just a skateboard that's much longer than usual, and used for longboarding (as opposed to skateboarding). Instead of street style skating using ramps and pipes, longboards are almost always used for downhill racing, getting from point a to point b, or cruising around town. Since longboards are heavier than a standard board, they are not ideal for doing any kind of tricks. Longboarding is compared to surfing, like "surfing on land" or "surfing on concrete". The design of the longboard allows big turns and quick carves just like the surfers do.

Longboarding started becoming popular around the same time as surf culture back in the 1950's. People say that longboarding started in southern California where riders enjoyed rolling hills and streets, but some believe longboarding started in Hawaii. This is still arguable today.

The equipment used for longboarding is nearly the same that is used for skateboarding. You'll notice longboarders will wear gloves and a helmet at a minimum. Longboarders participating in downhill races will wear special gloves to protect their hands while maneuvering the board (this is done in a lying position). Of course wrist, knee, and elbow padding is always recommended, especially for a beginner.

Most longboards are 35-60 inches long. Shorter boards can still be called longboards if their main purpose is the same as longboarding (cruising, downhill racing, travel). Longboards come in all kinds of shapes such as: pintails, flat nose, and boards shaped like a longer shortboard. Pintails allow looser trucks and larger wheels to be installed for more of a smooth surfing feel.

Longboard wheels can be much larger than regular skateboard wheels. The size difference is because smaller wheels have to spin faster to maintain the same speed, so larger wheels create less friction for a faster and smoother ride. Smaller wheels sometimes have problems with sticks, rocks, and cracks in the street or sidewalk. The larger the wheel size, the less likely it will stop rolling, and more likely to just roll over the obstruction.

Other hardware such as trucks and bearings are exactly the same on a skateboard and a longboard. There are a few types of trucks specific to longboards, which make the boards easier to use for downhill racing. Two of these are called Randal R-I Downhill style trucks and Torsion trucks.

Many Longboarders as well as skateboarders like to build their own decks in order to get the exact board they want. Board builders have a variety of materials like fiberglass, bamboo, and even a foam core. If you're thinking of building your own skateboard or longboard, everything can be purchased on the internet or local skateshop, including board building instructions.

Learning Your Lesson From This Tax Season

The April tax filing deadline has just passed and you've survived another year or at least filed an extension to put things off till October. Now what? Well, if you filed you should learn your lesson and save more money next year.

So, how are you feeling? Most people experience a combination of relief, exhaustion and aggravation after filing their taxes. They are relieved to be done with it. They are exhausted from trying to get everything together and figured out. They are aggravated that they had to pay so much money. The latter two of these feelings can be improved on next year if you are willing to make even a bit of effort. Let's take a look at how.

The first thing you can do to make tax season less of a nightmare is to get organized. It is simple. Head over to an office store and get a hanging folder stand. You can get some on wheels and stick them in a closet. Now grab some folders and start labeling them - expenses, investments, etc. In less than 15 minutes, you'll have a filing system. Now make it a habit when you come home to file anything that needs filing.

The second thing you can do is get a bookkeeping program of some sort. I use Quicken, but there are plenty of others that work well. Now log your finances in it. The advantage of such software is that you'll have all the critical information at a finger tip when tax time rolls around next year. Instead of hustling to find receipts and then figure out what is classified as what, you'll be able to whip through everything in a matter of mouse clicks. It will make things much faster and easier.

Finally, get an accountant. A good accountant will save you a ton on taxes and you can write their fees off. Don't just show up a couple of weeks before the end of the year. Plan on meeting with them for 30 minutes each fiscal quarter. This allows them to see how your finances are progressing and to make recommendations on changes or strategies that will save you a bundle.

Paying taxes will never be fun per se, but the act can be less painful. Learn your lesson from this years efforts and you'll be in much better shape next year when tax season rolls around.

Find Out Three Useful Types of Art and Activity Tables For Classrooms

Most classrooms need more than just desks when it comes to surfaces for children to use. Art and activity tables can be the perfect way to fill up a classroom with useful tools. They can be used for playtime, arts and crafts, or science projects. Before you decide on the best art and activity tables for your classroom, consider what is available.

Some tables include several activities, which are ideal for kids of any age during playtime. They are similar to what you might find in a waiting room, and often include popular activities like mazes and blocks. One such table features both a train set and Legos, and allows several kids at once to play. Another larger table boasts an equally large train set that will thrill kids of any age. Such a table is perfect to put in the play area of a classroom, as it easily fits in the corner, and can attract nearly any child.

Most teachers make time for art, either as part of the week or in a separate, dedicated class. Either way, art and activity tables are perfect for arts and crafts, as they provide plenty of room for a few kids to sit and work on their masterpieces. Some tables are simple, providing ample space and a roll of paper for children to practice their art on. Such tables may also come with a surface that is perfect for drawing on with dry erase markers. Other types of art and activity tables come with plenty of storage space for supplies, including paint cups, an art drying rack, and rolls of paper. Clearly, any of these art and activity tables are ideal for classroom art time.

Many science projects for young kids focus on finding out how different materials interact. Sand and water projects are quite popular for children, and are both educational and fun. However, it is difficult to experiment with these materials without the proper equipment. Fortunately, art and activity tables meant for this type of science project include space for both sand and water. They also usually come with a plug so they are easy to drain, and can be used both indoors and outdoors.

If you are looking to fill up your classroom with useful objects, art and activity tables can be just what you need. They can aid in either playtime or regular curriculum for many grades. This means that any teacher should consider their use in their own classroom. Before you buy, simply take inventory of your classroom to decide what type of art and activity tables would help your students the most.

More Boxing Combinations Applied to Cardio Kickboxing

This is the third in a series on martial arts striking combinations used as choreography in cardio kickboxing. As said, a key difference between a trained martial artist and a streetfighter is that the martial artist reflexively hits in sequences of three or four moves. The instinctive reaction isn't just a one-move event - it's a more effective practiced sequence of strikes. One punch or kick is easy to defend against, but three or four thrown in a row can be very difficult to deal with.

This reflexive reaction of hitting in sequences is only learned through lots of repetition and drills, performing sequences over and over until it is an automatic reflex. Cardio kickboxing is an ideal way to do this. In fact many of the patterns in cardio kickboxing are drawn from such drills.

In this article, let's start with looking at some variations on a simple boxing sequence. We are going to see that a lot of variety can be had from a single sequence. Start out using a boxer's stance position, feet shoulder width apart and with left foot forward. The sequence is -

Jab, Jab, Jab, Cross

Now add some spice. Instead of three straight jabs, vary the pattern to -

Jab-up, Jab-down, Jab-middle, and Cross

Repeat 4-8 times. Now add some movement - Going back to a straight jab, look 90 degrees right and shuffle right leg first three steps to the side -

Right Jab Shuffle, Right Jab Shuffle, Right Jab Shuffle, and Left Cross

Immediately face and shuffle left with the same sequence on the other side -

Left Jab Shuffle, Left Jab Shuffle, Left Jab Shuffle, and Right Cross

Repeat shuffling back and forth four or eight times. An optional variation would be to add four forward punches after the cross on each side. I say punch because after the shuffle-cross, your legs will be square to the front so there isn't a difference between a Jab and a Cross. With the added punches, the sequence is -

Right Jab Shuffle, Right Jab Shuffle, Right Jab Shuffle, and Left Cross. Right punch, Left punch, Right punch, Left Punch

Then reverse and do the same sequence build mirrored to the left. Depending on the level of the class it might be good to introduce the sequences half time then double them up to tempo. Devote equal time to right and left-leg forward positions.

Now lets look at what can be done with another basic sequence, this one from Kickboxing. The second basic sequence also starts from boxer's stance with, in this case, the left leg forward -

Jab, Cross, Jab, Guard

Do four times then change the Guard to a Knee -

Jab, Cross, Jab, Lead-leg Knee

Do four times then change the Knee to a Front Kick -

Jab, Cross, Jab, Lead-leg Front Kick

Now shift 45 degrees to the right, do the sequence once, then shift 90 degrees to the left (45 degrees to the left of the front) and do once, then shift 90 degrees to the right and do once, shift left and do once, and so on. The trick here is to turn during the kick. Depending on the class you might want to go back to a knee instead of a kick for the turn. Cue the shifts verbally (turn to the right corner of the room, turn to the left corner) and by, just before you start moving 45 degrees off angle, pointing in the direction you are shifting to.

After doing this four to eight times tell people 'we are going to keep going' and instead of switching back and forth, continue in one direction, after 4 shifts winding up where you started. Circle this way four times.

Then reverse your stance and repeat the sequence on the other side.

A simple variation on this would be to change the third strike from a Jab to a Lead Hook -

Jab, cross, lead hook, cover
Jab, cross, lead hook, lead knee
Jab, cross, lead hook, lead front kick

Again it might be appropriate to introduce the sequences half time then double them up. Devote equal time to right and left-leg forward positions. The basic standing versions of all of these sequences work equally well on the bags. After you get the progressions down, start inter-mixing the combinations together in different patterns to present something different every class.

My Introduction To The Basics Of BJJ Technique

I have been training in Muay Thai for a couple of years now, and while I absolutely love it, I have been a bit restless and ready for a new challenge. I am fortunate to train in a gym that has only top level professional fighters as instructors, so I have seen some awesome mixed martial artists at work. After some internal debate did I want to concentrate on my hands and focus on boxing? try judo? maybe do a boot camp? I decided it was time to give Brazilian Jiu Jitsu a try.

I have always admired masters of BJJ Technique. The focus, strategic thinking, and mental and physical agility required to perfect this martial art are extraordinary. Even a slightly misplaced hand may mean the difference between winning and losing a match. The absolute precision required of the BJJ athlete combined with the necessity of creating strategy on the move is profoundly challenging.

I am someone who likes to understand things and be good at what I do. This makes starting a physically and mentally challenging martial art from scratch somewhat problematic for me. So I decided that I would take a couple of private training lessons in basic BJJ Technique before beginning to roll with the class. It is one of the best training decisions I have ever made.

My instructor is Steve Headden, former ISCF Middle Weight World Champion. Steve is a former Army Ranger, a professional MMA fighter, five time Pan American Medalist, and two time World Games Champion with black belts in both Judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Basically an all around Bad Ass, and here he is teaching me the basics of BJJ Technique. I am seriously lucky. The best part about it is that he is an awesome teacher and one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. Definitely the speak softly and no need to carry a big stick type.

For our first lesson, Steve suggested we do some basic self defense so that I could get a feel for how BJJ Technique can be useful in real world situations. What an eye opener! I am not a skittish person. The area I grew up in is not easy, I have lived in New York, traveled in the Middle East, Latin America and other parts of the developing world. I know how to be aware of my surroundings, not put myself in dangerous situations and if I do happen to be in a difficult situation I can handle myself. On top of that I have been studying Thai Boxing for a couple of years. I am no expert, but I am not a push over either. All my thoughts of being able to handle myself went out the window as Steve used a couple of simple moves to get me to the ground and incapacitate me before I had any idea what was going on.

Steve then proceeded to show me how to counter these attacks and we moved into learning some of the vocabulary of BJJ Technique: Guard, Half Guard, Mount, Side Mount, Rear Mount and North South. All in all it was a very full hour and I was seriously glad I had brought my notebook. It was everything I hoped it would be, physically demanding, mentally challenging and the promise of becoming even more so. . . . I can not wait until our next class.

Kickboxing Combinations Applied to Cardio Kickboxing

This is the second in a series on martial arts striking combinations used as choreography in cardio kickboxing. As said, a key difference between a trained martial artist and a streetfighter is that the martial artist reflexively hits in sequences of three or four moves. The instinctive non-thinking reaction isn't just a one-move event, its a more effective practiced sequence of strikes.

Useful for cardio kickboxing choreography, here are some real-world combinations culled from the martial art sport loosely called Kickboxing. What came to be known as competitive kickboxing is a constrained system common to a number of martial arts. The original brand of "Kickboxing" was developed in Japan in 1950 by boxing promoter Osamu Noguchi as a style/ruleset for beating Muay Thai fighters. In classic competitive Kickboxing opponents are allowed to strike with both the fists and the feet, hitting above the hip. However, unlike Muay Thai, using elbows or knees was forbidden and the use of shins was also often not allowed.

Kicks are generally more powerful than punches and so are a valuable tool. But in practice it is a good idea to set up a leg kick with handwork first. A jab or two will make your opponent think about your hands...then you step and kick. Or jab/cross/right kick, with the cross either being more of a fake and push (which allows you to kick really hard) or a hard right that sets up a right kick It's more difficult to kick hard with this combo, but if you drill the guy with a good cross he'll be knocked back a bit and then you step in...

Here are the combinations:

Jab, cross, lead hook, cover

Jab, cross, lead hook, lead front kick

Jab, cross, rear leg front roundhouse kick, cover

Introduce the sequences half-time, then depending on the students, double it up. For the last sequence above make sure to tell the students to bring their rear foot back to the rear-foot starting position after the roundhouse kick (instead of alongside the other). In practice the cover happens simultaneously with bringing the foot back.

Of course for every rule (punch before kick) there is an exception. This sequence works particularly well on the bags.

Lead leg side kick, feet together, rear leg step back

Lead leg side kick, feet together, cross with rear leg step back

These combinations can be repeated individually or in sequences either on the floor or with a heavy bag. Devote equal time to right and left leg forward positions. Most are oriented around smooth rotation around the spine, swinging the body so that each punch or kick winds up for the next. After you get the progressions down, start inter-mixing the combinations together in different patterns to present something different every class.

Wine Countries of America

A good way to maximize the pleasures of a vacation is a trip through wine country. There are many vineyards and wineries in this country and they all welcome and look forward to your visit.

Contrary to popular beliefs all US wines do not come from California. There are wineries and vineyards in every state in the USA. All the way from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Wines will differ in many ways according to region. Depending on where the grapes are grown and the climate in which they ripen. Length of growing time, altitude and even the terrain contribute to the quality of a wine.

If you are a connoisseur of fine wine then you know the effects of different areas on the quality of the wine. The knowledgeable wine connoisseur also knows the procedures of wine tasting and what to look for in each tasting.

Of course, when tasting wine one prime concern is in the blind tasting process. Blind taste test is simply a taste from an unlabeled source. Knowing the maker of a particular wine can influence ones true test. With no label there is no past experience to base a taste on.

The temperature of the wine is also of importance in the taste test. For the test the wine should be served at a temperature of between 60 and 64 degrees. Of course, there are a few exceptions to the rule.

At that temperature the flavors and aroma are more distinct and can be judged in a standardized way. Even the glassware is important in wine tasting. The ideal glassware should be wide at the bottom with a narrower top. The shape of the glassware allows one to swirl the wine and has a larger surface for detecting the color.

Some of the wineries to be visited are the Fess Parker Winery in California and the 720 Wine Cellars in the Oregon area.

When you start planning your next vacation consider a trip through your own wine country. The enjoyment if a wine tasting vacation is not only in the wine. It is also in the sights and adventures along the way.

The seashores of Oregon, the sunshine, lakes and mountains of California, the deserts of Arizona and the list goes on.

So start the car and lets roll.

Summer Driving Tips

With the weather changing, you certainly cannot deny the fact that the seasons are changing and yes, they are surely getting warmer by the minute. That is because soon after spring, summer will soon be here.

For drivers, welcoming summer is good news for them. You see, most believe that running and driving around in icy road conditions is far off worse compared to driving under the hot sunshine. Well, summer has its own share of disadvantages that is why it is important to follow some tips recommended by auto experts to ensure and increase your chances of safe summer trips.

Before you drive off for a long journey, it is important that you do have your car checked first. This should be done at least a week before you go on that journey. Also, it is necessary that you have your car undergo a full service. This way, if there are any parts that need changing, you can always repair them as soon as possible. Also, if there is a need to do maintenance, then it would be the right time for that. Before you start your engine and start your summer crusade for fun, check the following first: your car's engine, oil fluid, brake fluid, clutch fluid, battery electrolyte, tire pressure, and windscreen washer reservoir.

Always have some spare kits and some spare parts available during the entire duration of your trip. That way, if you do encounter some minor problems that could be easily remedied, then you would be saving yourself the trouble of waiting for help to arrive and you also would be helping your pocket for you would not have to spend on somebody else's services just to fix any problem. Important items in your spare kit should include a fan belt, some radiator hoses, bulbs, points, a condenser, a pair of spark plugs as well as a roll of insulating tape.

Sail on Sailor - A Fun Scripture Activity For Your Elementary Kids

There is something thrilling about being on a boat. Whether in a little canoe out on a quiet lake or on a sailboat out in the middle of the ocean, boating is a beautiful way to enjoy God's creation.

The Bible has some interesting ship stories. Here is a list of 9 Bible passages about boats. You will use them for the following activity: Genesis 7:1, Exodus 2:3, Jonah 1:3, Luke 5:3, Matthew 13:2, Matthew 8:24, John 6:21, Acts 27:41 and Matthew 4:21-22.

For this idea, I suggest you obtain a kiddie pool filled with water. Next, if you can, purchase 12 toy plastic boats (your local dollar store will probably have some) and with a permanent marker, number each one with a number from 1 to 12 and set them afloat in the pool. Now, you will need to create 2 charts - one for your eyes only and the other for all the children to see. The first chart should be written out as follows:

1. Genesis 7:1

2. Exodus 2:3

3. Ship Sunk!

4. Jonah 1:3

5. Ship Sunk!

6. Luke 5:3

7. Matthew 13:2

8. Matthew 8:24

9. John 6:21

10. Acts 27:41

11. Ship Sunk!

12. Matthew 4:21-22

The second chart that the children can see, should contain these 9 different captions:

Noah's Ark, Moses' Basket Boat, Jonah's Ship, James' and John's Boat, Peter's Boat, Parable of the Sower was Told, Jesus calmed the Sea, Jesus Came Here after Walking on Water, and Paul's Shipwreck. I actually wrote my on pictures of boats I found on my computer.

To play the game, divide your children into 2 teams. Have a child from the first team "fish' a boat out of the pool. He will look at the number on the boat and tell it to you. You will look on the first chart and see whether the child will read a verse or whether his ship has sunk. If his ship sunk, the play goes to the next team. If he is to read a verse, he does so from a Bible and then tries to pick the caption that matches the passage he just read. If successful, he gets 50 points for his team. The team with the most points wins! Happy sailing!

Is The California Realtors Contract Assignable?

This is a question that has been asked to us several times in the past... members wanting to know if the California Realtors Contract is assignable, or will they have to close on the contract themselves and then close with buyer? It's also been asked if the buyer's cash covers the cost of the first contract or will separate financing have to be obtained?

The only time you'd be using the realtor's contract in California is if you're making an offer through a Realtor. If that's not the case, it's totally irrelevant. If that is the case, you're will just need to review it. It also depends on whom you're buying it from. If you're buying it from a bank, they will definitely want you to close in the name that's on that contract. That doesn't mean its recommended that you go get your own loan unless you're paying cash and intend to get a private loan anyway. If that's the case, it's all irrelevant because you are gonna close on it first.

If you intend to assign the contract then ensure your contract allows you to do that. Try making somebody's name as a trustee so that when it's closed, then it's closed in that name even if that trust is your buyer's trust.

If you're gonna sell it to an investor I don't make any offer in something or other as trustee cause I can tell the investor the only way you can close is in this trusts name. And then just assign the contract because in fact you are closing in the name that's at the top of the contract.

All of this brings up the additional question regarding the legalities of simultaneous closings. Whether or not simultaneous closings are illegal or legal is not the question. The question is will the lender for your buyer ...the lenders for your buyer's care. That's the biggest concern.

There's no law that say you can't buy a house and sell it the next day. It's the title companies that are misinterpreting the law or have their own conclusions that are giving the problems. The is especially true if there are new lenders involved. As far as wholesaling goes, if it is a problem just assign the contract and don't do a simultaneous closing. It's much cheaper anyway. When you're assigning the contract there is only one closing, your seller is deeding it to your buyer, period.

Throw a Wine Tasting Party

Although this particular kind of party is most enjoyed by wine worshippers, those who don't take immense pleasure in the sacred juice of the grape will enjoy it as well. It's a great party to get people talking and learn about wine as well.

First, you have to put together a guest list (you're probably thinking "what a lame 'how to' this is going to be). But this part is important because each bottle of wine can supply 25 guests with an ounce, just enough to get a feel for it. Make sure you take a head count on actual wine tasters, because inevitably there will be several couples where only one in the pair is going to indulge.

So now you have to assign wines to your guests. There are several ways you can do it, either by region, variety, or price. For example, break up the wines into below $15 a bottle, between $15 - $25, or over $25. You can also have some bring a syrah, a pinot noir, a cabernet sauvignon, etc., or you can do any combination of the three. Be creative.

Before the party you'll have to get some paper wine bags from the liquor store because this is a blind tasting. Make sure you have enough wine glasses, donned with charms or another method of identifying glasses during the evening. You should also have some kind of spittoon available for those not looking to roll out the door when it's all over.

As for the menu, cheese is a must. Any variety will do but you should try to mix it up and have hard and soft cheeses of different potency. Stilton, brie, gouda, and havarti are good picks, but be adventurous and try others. You can also have other types of cocktail appetizers available, as well as bread and crackers to clean the palate between tastings.

Set the mood with candles and "wine and dine" music and have a vacuum and stain remover on hand to clean up the unavoidable spills throughout the evening. When guests walk through the door bag the bottle immediately and give it an identifying letter or number. Place it on a side table along with the other bagged bottles until the tasting begins.

Serve some champagne or punch while everyone is arriving as you'll want to wait until everyone gets there to begin. Give your guests some kind of writing instruments, like pens and paper or pre-printed cards so they can judge the wines as they go. Have them rate each wine from 1 to 10, take a guess at what type of wine they are drinking, and what price range they think it is in.

When every bottle has been tapped and tasted, take the ballots and analyze the voting. Then you can announce who brought the best wine, who guessed the most right, etc. You can give out some prizes if you feel up to it and you want to make the evening even more interesting. A great first prizes include a Wine of the Month Club membership, a set of wine glasses, or a decent bottle of wine.

Serve some coffee to perk up those driving home and anything with chocolate in it as a fine finish to the event.

Microsoft Dynamics GP Table Structure Overview

Microsoft Great Plains, former Great Plains Software Dynamics/eEnterprise should be considered as ERP platform for midsize and large business, so SQL data maintenance and repair is normal IT procedure, this is why table structure and MRP architecture should be familiar to SQL DB administrator. We will begin with architecture and table name coding and then go down to typical data repair

o Setup Tables. These tables have 4 prefix. IV40100 - this is Inventory Control Module setup table. Setup tables may have only one record, if this is module setup or multiple records, if this is something like Inventory Class setup (vendor, customer class setup to give additional examples)

o History Tables. These tables have 3 prefix. SOP30200 - this is Sale Transaction Header history table. When you post transactions - they go to open (optional phase) and history

o Open Tables. These tables have 2 prefix. GL20000 - this table stores all your open year posted GL transactions. For some of the module open stage is skipped (Sales Order Processing - here transactions when posted go to the history tables directly)

o Work Tables. These tables have 1 prefix. These tables are present in each module: GL, Inventory Control, Invoicing, Receivable Management, Payroll, Payable Management, Purchase Order Processing, Bill of Material. Great Plains has batch posting module - this feature allows you to save and store work (or unposted) transactions in the batch. SOP10100 - this is Sales Transaction Header Work table

o Master Tables. These tables have 0 prefix. We will give you several examples: IV00101 - inventory item master stores all your inventory items, RM00101 - customer master table, IV00200 - vendor master table, GL00100 - General Ledger account master table

o Table repair technique. When you consider to repair one of GP tables, you do backup of the table, execute this SQL statement:

Select * into IV00101_Backup from IV00101

Then do you data repair. If you need to roll back to old backed up version of the table, do this:

1. Clean your original table: delete IV00101
2. Restore it from backup: alter table IV00101_Backup drop column DEX_ROW_ID insert into IV00101 select * from IV00101_Backup

Some additional hints. Microsoft Great Plains is Dexterity application. Dex internal logic adds autoid column DEX_ROW_ID, so you have to drop it prior to restoring the table from backup.

Tips For RV Camping - Setting Up & Breaking Down Your Campsite

Are you a seasoned rv camping expert, or just starting out? No matter what your level of experience with RV camping, setting up your RV campsite is easy if you adhere to a few simple guidelines! The #1 rule in a smooth setup is keeping it the same every time you go! Refer to the following checklist or create one that fits your needs...after all, the idea is get your RV campsite up and running and the lawn chairs out next to the grill as quickly as possible!

Check in: Whether or not you have a campsite already reserved, let the campground hosts know your site preferences. They can provide you with a site map to help you find where everything is located.

Initial site check: Once you arrive at your site, be sure to check for overhead obstructions and any other objects that may interfere with parking or placing your recreational vehicle. Make sure the electrical connections are working before you start set-up.

Parking: Plan ahead for how you intend to position your RV on the site and the best way to make that happen. Once you're satisfied with where you're located, level the rig, unhitch it and chock the trailer wheels and place blocks under the landing gear. If you have a Fifth wheel, pull the hitch lever. (This may sound ridiculous, but be sure to disconnect the connections from the truck to the RV before you drive away! The embarassed voice of experience speaking!)Once your RV is in place, make sure it's as level as possible.

Site Set-up: Once you're sure the RV is stable, hook up your electrical connection, water, sewer, etc. and turn your LP gas on.

Relax: Begin to unload the 'basics': lawn chairs, grills, any awnings, tables, or extras.

Have fun!

At the end of your rv camping vacation, the following tips and guidelines can be helpful in preparing for your departure:

Inside: Wipe off all your gear, stow all loose items such as pictures, knick-knacks, dishes, etc. Close the windows and vents, secure cabinets and drawers. Make sure all of your appliances are turned off, unplugged and secured.

Gear:Roll up and stow all awnings, rugs, chairs, grill, etc. Dump holding tanks, disconnect and stow hoses. Unplug electrical connections, fill fresh water tank, drain and stow the water hose and filters. Be sure to turn off your propane!

Rig removal: Remove and stow all stabilizers, wheel chocks and any other parking gear. Hitch up and check your hitch by pulling forward just enough to make sure it's tight.Hook up the break-away switch cable, umbilical connection, and check to make sure all trailer and brake lights are working and raise the landing gear

Double Check: Make a throough check of your campsite to make sure you have everything taken care of before locking up your rv

RV Camping is fun, and offers an opportunity to experience scenic vistas and unforgettable attractions no matter where you go!

Danny Jacobs "Seven Knockouts Eleven Rounds"

A superstar in the making Danny Jacobs in just 11 rounds has won 7 fights all by knockout. Even the legendary Iron Mike Tyson who like Jacobs grew up in Brownsville, Brooklyn needed 13 rounds to accumulate 7 victories. Tyson went on to win his first 19 bouts by knock out. What is even more amazing the middleweight Jacobs has performed his knockout magic on the under cards of major fights in huge stadiums which is very rare for a rookie boxer.

Beginning on December 8, 2007 when Jacobs made his professional debut on the Floyd Mayweather- Ricky Hatton under card at the MGM Grand Las Vegas. Brooklyn was truly in the house that night. Jacobs in matter of seconds 29 to be exact knocked out his opponent Jose Jesus Hurtado with a wicked left hook. Diamondboxing.com was present that night and instantaneously realized that Jacobs was one that needed to be watched. After his first victory the 21 year old Jacobs has gone on to fight on the under cards of Calzaghe - Hopkins and De La Hoya - Forbes with the same results. Jacobs informs us that his next bout will be on the Jeff Lacy - Epifanio Mendoza card on July 23rd at Morongo Casino Resort & Spa in Cabazon, California. One can only imagine of such a great beginning but Jacobs says he is humbled and blessed to do what he loves with great success so far.

Jacobs boxing journey started several years ago when he was in 8th grade and some of the neighborhood kids asked him if he would like to go to the gym with them. Jacobs figured it would be a good chance to beat them up without getting in trouble from his mother. Not only did he like it he was good at it. He decided to try it again the next day after sparing some more and knocking out a couple of mouth pieces he was hooked. Jacobs went on to have a great amateur career compiling a record of 137 - 7 and winning four New York Golden Glove Championships, he fell short of making the 2008 US Olympic Team losing to Shawn Estrada in the finals of the USA Olympic Trials. Jacobs close friend who he refers to as his little brother Sadam Ali also from Brooklyn, New York made the team in the lightweight division. Jacobs will also be watching his former amateur peers Gary Russell and Raushee Warren compete for the US Team in the Olympics. Jacob's says he has a great deal of respect for amateur boxing and admires both Russell and Warren. After Jacobs missed making the Olympic Team and declining to be an alternate on the team he decided to turn pro.

Jacobs who posse's quickness to go along with his extreme knock out power has been able to develop this deadly combination working with his trainers Victor Roundtree and Andre Rozier. Day to day Jacobs switches up his workout routine between the two trainers who have him up at 6 am to do his road work. One of Jacob's concerns maybe stamina since his longest outing was only 4 rounds against Leshon Sims on April 19th on the Calzaghe - Hopkins under card at the Thomas Mack Center in Las Vegas. When asked if he was concerned about his stamina Jacobs was quick to say that it could be a problem but he was not really concerned. He feels that he is in great shape and can adjust to different conditions that occur in the ring. As Jacobs faces tougher opponents and longer scheduled bouts we will see if stamina plays an issue.

The focused Jacobs surrounds himself with the best business minded people in the sport. Not only is he advised by Al Haymon who has guided the likes of Floyd Mayweather, Vernon Forrest and Paul Williams, he is affiliated with Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotion Company. Jacobs has fought all seven of his fights on the cards of Golden Boy promoted events and says that there is a very good chance that he will be signing on with them. Growing up Jacobs followed the career of De La Hoya and Golden Boy's Promotions partner Bernard Hopkins. He always dreamed of fighting them but will have to settle for fighting on their under cards. But one of his other aspirations may come true with the Roy Jones Jr. - Joe Calzaghe bout scheduled for September 20th at the Mecca of Boxing Madison Square Garden, just maybe Jacobs will make his hometown professional debut on this card.

Building Materials For the Traditional Spanish Mission

The Spanish Mission Style of Architecture served functional and aesthetic purposes when it was first produced in California. "Padres" or priests from Spain came to the coastline of California to build their missions and convert the natives, and the style of the missions was a reflection of the great cultural soup that was being prepared. Native Californians used their skill, priests used their design aesthetic from the old country, and the raw materials of their work would come from the natural products off the coast of California.

The materials that would eventually build the Spanish missions would later be used and emulated for the Spanish mission style of architecture that later became popular in California and elsewhere in the US. Buildings throughout Los Angeles tried to emulate this style as it became more fashionable, and even in other places across the nation, like in St. Louis, Missouri where T.P. Barnett's Spanish Mission Style Deco building still stands. The Barnett building was a fusion building of Spanish and Art Deco that became incredibly popular in the 1920's, and today holds true to its beauty and grace.

When Padres were trying to get their missions built in California, they had a lot of difficulties to say the very least. There was a scarcity of imported materials as well as a shortage of skilled labor, so they had to use simple building materials and easy methods of construction to get the job done. They gathered material and workforce from the surrounding lands.

The 5 most important materials they used were adobe, timber, stone, brick and tile, which are all the staples of the style today. Adobe was a very innovative material made from earth and water, chaff, straw and manure. These were mud bricks, and they were very useful in this region of the US. The method was originated in Spain and Mexico, so workers were easily able to assemble the bricks that would make up the missions.

Level ground was found, and the workers would put the mud mixture into brick molds, and arrange them in rows to be leveled by hand to the top of the mold's frame. Today, these bricks still have hand and fingerprints, reminiscent of the people who once worked long hours. Some people even inscribed names and dates on the bricks. California adobe was fairly easy to make and handle, and lightweight for easy carrying.

The Spanish Missions and the later Spanish mission style that would be replicated get their look from the sort of "man-made" authentic quality. There was no existent lumber, so workers used stone axes and crude saws to shape the wood. The missions had a very distinct appearance thanks to these crude methods, and later this appearance was greatly sought after, and people would pay a high price for it.

The Spanish Mission style came to be associated with luxury, ironically enough, and today we see that style for all its elegance, simplicity, and style. Going back to the T.P. Barnett building in St. Louis, all the elegance and refinement of the Spanish mission style's potential is quite clear.
