The Potential For High School Skateboarding Teams
Did you know that skateboarding is very close to becoming a recognized high school sport? The National High School Skateboarding Association, launched in 2007, is working to make skateboarding a team sport in high schools across the country. Many see this step as fundamental in making skateboarding a mainstream rather than counterculture sport.
The first season of team skateboarding, in 2007, was known as the California High School Skateboarding Club. Though it began small, it received widespread attention. This club was soon contacted by people all over the country who wanted to begin similar skateboarding teams at schools nationwide. For the 2008 season, more than 20 school teams signed up to compete throughout Southern California, and the name was changed to the National High School Skateboarding Association to reflect the national attention the movement had already received.
In 2009, there were over 45 teams competing in three regions: North, Central, and South Los Angeles. Though the movement is still centralized in California, not surprising considering the lengthy history of skateboarding there, the movement is poised to explode throughout the nation in the coming years. Soon you may see a competitive skateboarding team at a school in your town.
The current competitive skateboarding season includes two competitions in the regular season, with the winners advancing to additional competitions at the semi-final level. The top individuals at the end of the season can potentially win an invitation to compete in the X Games, one of the sport's most prestigious competitions. NHSSA provides a valuable platform for young skateboarders looking to get their talents seen by big names.
The mission of the National High School Skateboard Association, or NHSSA, is to provide an environment for high school skateboarders to showcase their skating talents while still in school. The NHSSA believes that young skateboarders, like all other young athletes, need an outlet to compete and reach their full potential. The NHSSA supports skateboarders who want to take their abilities to the next level professionally, those who want to have a career in the skateboard industry, and those who simply enjoy skateboarding as a hobby.
Though this movement has received widespread attention, it is actually not the first attempt at competitive high school skateboarding teams. In fact, the idea goes as far back as the 1970s, the era of team skateboarding. In this era, skateboarders would often affiliate themselves with their local surf/skate shop, forming teams that would travel throughout California, competing for bragging rights. Though most of the competitors were high school students, teams were affiliated not with high schools but with skate shops.
With the NHSSA, it is clear that skateboarding is here to stay. This popular sport is on the cusp of becoming widely recognized as a high school sport. In future decades, it may become possible for teens across the nation to join a competitive high school skateboarding team. Still, the prospect of team skateboarding is not attractive to some young skateboarders, particularly those who skate with an individualist spirit and resist becoming part of an organized group, instead preferring skateboarding to remain counterculture.

School Homecoming Prom, Dance, and Party Ideas and Themes
Is your student body planning a high school prom, dance, or party? Do you need ideas for your themes? Well look no further we can help spark your creative juices by going over several factors that determine a successful prom.
High School Homecoming
Most High School Homecomings are organized by Student Council Advisors. Now the main idea for a homecoming is to promote school spirit. The planning that goes into a homecoming or party is not as involved as your High School Prom. This does not mean that the decorations should get overlooked at your schools homecoming. We will discuss those ideas later.
High School Prom
At a majority of High Schools, their Proms are planned by the Junior Class Prom Committee. The prom is the send off for the school's upper class students. There can be two separate proms depending on the size of your junior and senior class. Some schools in different districts go as far as to combine proms due to smaller class sizes. Since the High School Prom is a formal event, it is usually receives more attention and funding.
High School Homecoming Dance Ideas
So you and your committee are looking for ideas for your homecoming, dance, or party. Your themes depend mostly on the traditions of your school. Try to tie in what your school mascot. If your party or dance is something more casual, then it may be predetermined. The basic ingredients for successful school homecoming dance are music, hype, and energy. The company you hire for the Michigan DJ can make or break your ticket sales for the next dance depending on how the music was balanced. How well your committee hypes the party will determine the outcome as well. Do not forget that the energy level at your school homecoming dance will be based on how much decorating your group does.
High School Prom Themes
Your High School Prom theme deserves more attention than the typical High School Homecoming. This means spending more time selecting a reputable venue location, caterer, photographer, and Michigan DJ Company. Here is a list of High School Prom themes for you to choose from.

The Ultimate Dance for your Students
Selecting a theme and going over ideas will help guarantee a fun and memorable event. This is a key component in producing an unforgettable prom or homecoming dance. First, think about the type of prom you want to have, whether you want it to be romantic, fun, or mysterious. Most schools develop themes that generally set the guidelines for the prom colors and decorations. Some schools have become more creative by revolving the entire dance party around the theme and ideas. This goes all the way down to the students costume attire to decorations. Whatever theme your committee chooses, make sure it fits the personality and customs of your student body.

Joshua Tree - Hiking Ryan Mountain
With the onset of winter, hikers in California turn to Joshua Tree in the Mojave Desert. Hiking Ryan Mountain is good way to see an excellent summit view of the park.
Joshua Tree - Ryan Mountain
If you're looking for the best view in Joshua Tree National Park, Ryan Mountain is the undisputed winner. Make it to the top and you'll find a 360 degree view of the park with mountains on one side and the sprawling desert on the other.
Ryan Mountain is reached by hiking the...drum roll please...Ryan Mountain Trail. The trail is roughly one and half miles and takes 45 minutes to an hour depending on your pace. Easy to follow, the trail winds to and up the mountain, giving you a unique panorama as you climb. The incline is pretty moderate, but hiking the trail can be a good workout if you happen to catch it on a really windy day.
The winds on Ryan Mountain can get very serious. We are talking gale force winds. Even if the winds are roaring on the day you visit, go ahead and make the hike. It is relatively short and the views definitely make the effort worth it.
Once you reach the summit, you are going to be literally and symbolically blown away. It is a rare day the wind doesn't blow like all get out. Still, you'll hardly notice since the view is incredible. From the summit, you'll be able to see Queen Valley, Pinto Basin, Lost Horse Valley and even the snow covered peak of Mount San Jacinto in the distance.
To get to Ryan Mountain, take Park Boulevard out of Joshua Tree Town. After 16 miles or so, you'll see a sign for Keys View. Turn left and go a bit over two miles till you see a parking lot on the side of the road with a sign for the trail. Crowds are usually at a minimum.
While much of the country is in a deep freeze in the winter, Joshua Tree is at its best. Hiking the Ryan Mountain Trail is a good way to check it out.

Exquisite Charlotte Eateries
Located in the heart of North Carolina is the flourishing city of Charlotte. "The Queen City" is the largest city in North Carolina and is well-known for its quickly advancing metropolitan area. In the last twenty years, Charlotte has seen the establishment and success of their football team, The Carolina Panthers, two different basketball organizations and recently, the opening of America's first ever NASCAR Hall of Fame. With "The Queen City" mostly known for its sport venues and enchanting nightlife, many overlook one of the most important things when it comes to the reputation of a city, their food.
When people think of North Carolina, they usually think barbecue with the vinegar based BBQ sauce. While the traditional southern cuisine in Charlotte still remains exceptional, people, along with nourishments in this prospering city have become more and more diverse as the years progress. This diversity of people throughout the years have been a blessing for the city of Charlotte.
Not only can you get top-notch barbecue, you can also go down the street to a Mexican Taqueria or even travel to the Orient for superb Asian cooking. Here are a list of restaurants located in Charlotte that I find are divine and delectable. The types of restaurants that have food that is so enticing, it makes eating there feel like a significant and unforgettable part in your life.
If you are in the mood for hamburgers and hot dogs, basically, good All-American food, these are the places you must try:
The Penguin- This old-school burger joint serves everything from old fashioned North Carolina barbecue to distinct dishes like deep-fried pickles and pimento cheese sandwiches but what I come here for are the humongous, mouthwatering burgers. It isn't the massive size or toppings on the burger that make it so tasty, it's actually the actual patty that makes the burger so savory. The meat is freshly prepared and hand-made and cooked perfectly for a scrumptious, juicy patty. Great food and great prices.
Recommendations:
Deep-Fried Pickles
Small-Block Burger, Big Block Burger, and Fully Loaded Hemi (A Challenge for anyone to eat)
Barbecue Plate
Pimento Cheese Sandwich
Winky Dinky Dog
Hand-Battered Corn Dog
Cook-Out - Although this drive-thru restaurant chain serves satisfied customers throughout the state of North Carolina, I still find Cook-Out as one of the top fast food restaurants in Charlotte. Their menu ranges from hush-puppies to freshly spun milkshakes. The burgers aren't bad either, with many different styles to choose from. My favorite and something everyone should experience, the milkshakes. Get more than enough food for around $6.
Recommendations:
Strawberry Cheesecake Milkshake
Peach Milkshake
Cheddar Style Burger and Chicken Sandwich
Cook-Out Style Footlong Hot Dog
Cajun French Fries
Ratcliffe on the Green - This elegant full service restaurant serves everything fresh and local. Most of the ingredients come from local farms with a great presentation of flavors. The French Onion Soup is warm and comforting and their famous Lamb looks and tastes like something that could have been prepared by an Iron Chef. My favorite is the southern classic, Shrimp and Grits. Although the price is rather high, the food is nothing short of spectacular.
Recommendations:
Lamb
French Onion Soup
Shrimp and Grits
Baked Brie
Softshell Crab
Bar-B-Q-King - Some of the best Barbecue I have ever had. It isn't the pork that makes this place special, it's the sweet and tangy barbecue sauce they serve with most of their dishes. While many come here for the pulled-pork, my personal favorite is the Bar-B-Q chicken, which is basically fried chicken dipped in their magnificent NC barbecue sauce.
Recommendations:
Bar-B-Q Chicken
Pulled Pork
Bar-B-Q Beans
Jumbo Shrimp
Fried Trout
Price's Chicken Coop - To me, the key to good fried chicken is the batter and the seasonings. Price's has both excellent batter and seasonings making Price's fried chicken some of the best fried chicken I've ever had. Their fried chicken is so good that the employees do nothing but fry chicken from open to close.
Recommendations:
What else? The fried chicken
Hush Puppies
French Fries
While many Americans are familiar with Mexican food, they aren't familiar with authentic Mexican cuisine. Authentic Hispanic restaurants are spread out all over Charlotte and in my opinion, have much bolder flavors than a La Carreta or Mi Pueblo.
Taqueira La Unica - This Mexican restaurant serves many authentic Mexican dishes. All their dishes are prepared fresh with a lot of good, seasonal flavors. Their tortillas are handmade and their salsa is homemade, making the flavors even better.
Recommendations:
Salsa Roja and Verde
Carne Asada Taco
Al Pastor Torta
Queso Quesadilla
(Keep in mind that these tacos and quesadillas are far different from places like Taco Bell. This is REAL Mexican cuisine.)
El Salvador Restaurant - This Salvadorian restaurant serves a dish that is so different and delicious. Pupusas is a dish native to El Salvador that consists of a thick tortilla filled with meat and cheese and served with a side of vinegar based spicy coleslaw. Unlike American coleslaw, the Salvadorian coleslaw doesn't have any mayonnaise. Although most Americans aren't accustomed to Salvadorian cuisine, Pupusas are something that everyone should experience because once you have, you will know what love feels like.
Recommendations:
Cheese Pupusas
Chicken Pupusas
Pork Pupusas
Cabo Fish Taco - This Baja grill serves more of a Tex Mex style type of cooking than Mexican. Cabo's has four different types of fish tacos, all with different types of fish. For those that aren't a big fan of seafood, they also have steak and chicken tacos. What makes the Cabo fish taco extraordinary from other fish tacos is their white cilantro sauce. The savory and spicy sauce is a perfect marriage with their fish.
Recommendations:
Beer Battered White Fish Tacos
Blackened Mahi Mahi Fish Tacos
Rasta Pasta
Diablo Shrimp
When people think of Chinese food, they think of those take out boxes filled with General Tso's Chicken and rice. When people think of Japanese food, they think of hibachi steak with white sauce. I am sorry to break it to you but those aren't real Asian dishes. Fortunately, Charlotte has restaurants that serve authentic Asian cuisine, along with the Americanized Asian restaurants. Here are a list of delectable Asian restaurants.
Dim Sum Chinese Restaurant - This is the closest thing to authentic Chinese food you can find in Charlotte. Dim Sum serves dumplings and seafood that are very similar to the types of Chinese food you would find in China. There is a large amount of selections and most of the items are delicious and fairly priced.
Recommendations:
Taro
Pork Dumplings
Pork Porridge
Sesame Ball
Thai Thai Takeout - While most Thai restaurants are full service, my favorite Thai place in Charlotte is Thai Thai takeout. The dishes are actually authentic Thai food, unlike most Thai restaurants around Charlotte. Not only is the food good, the price is great. When you go to a full service Thai restaurant, one plate of Phat Thai costs about $14 while Thai Thai Takeout's Phat Thai plate costs half that price. Quick, good, and cheap.
Recommendations:
Shrimp Phat Thai
Pork Kee Mow
Satay
Pho An Hoa - There are many restaurants around Charlotte that serve Pho, a Vietnamese noodle soup that usually contains thinly sliced beef, bean sprouts and Thai basil. Whenever I am in the mood for pho, I head over to Pho An Hoa. The most important thing when it comes to Pho is the meat and the broth. In my opinion, An Hoa has the best broth and meat.
Recommendations:
Pho with Eye Round Steak (For First Timers)
Pho with Eye Round Steak and Well-Done Flank
Bubble Tea
Spring Rolls
Passage to India - Indian cuisine contains some of the boldest flavors I have ever experienced. The good thing is that these bold flavors are delightful and the price is very good too. The thing about Indian food is that it is extremely different. You either love it or hate it, there's no in between. I love it.
Recommendations:
Chicken Masala
Garlic and Butter Naan
Sugar Cheese Balls
Chicken Tikki
Pisces Sushi - If you want to go somewhere for sushi, this is the place to go. The sushi is rolled elegantly and is also a good size. I have tried seven different varieties of their sushi rolls and have enjoyed them all. The fish is fresh and their honey mayo eel sauce is amazing.
Recommendations:
XOXO Sushi Roll
California Roll
Sake Bombs
Sapporo Beer
Being able to eat different types of cuisines and experience so many different cultures is something I find very gratifying. I can never grow tired of eating here in Charlotte because of the different assortments of restaurants and cuisines located throughout "The Queen City." The selections are abundant and comprehensive, all you have to do is look.

Spring and Summer Concert Tours of 2008
For any lover of music - whether it is rock and roll, hip hop, or country, or anything else under the sun, the spring and summer concert schedule of 2008 is set to blow your mind and give you a chance to see many different acts out there on the road. No matter where you live or where you'd like to travel to see shows, you'll be able to find plenty of great spring and summer concerts, and you'll be able to end the summer knowing you've seen the best that the music industry has to offer.
Rock Fans
No matter what time period of rock you are a fan of, you'll be able to find something to delight you this summer. Neil Diamond is on tour this year, starting in the late spring. So is Celine Dion. She starts her tour in the UK on May 2nd, and tours there for the majority of the summer. On August 15th, she begins the North American leg of the tour with two nights in Boston. Bon Jovi starts a tour in the US at the end of April, and is in the United States through the end of May. Starting in June, he will continue to tour in the UK for several dates.
Rod Stewart is also on tour this spring and summer, and will most definitely be coming to a tour destination near you. His tour begins in California at the end of July and goes through the end of August. The Police kick off an exciting and spectacular series of shows. They begin in Ontario on May 1st, and their shows run through the end of August. The Cure is also on tour, beginning in May and running through the end of June.
Jimmy Buffet is also on tour this spring and summer. His shows begin at the end of April, on the 22nd, and they run through the end of September. The Eagles currently have four shows planned in late May in Georgia. Also, Eric Clapton currently has 12 shows scheduled in May and June across the US and Canada. Elton John is playing several shows in Las Vegas during June of 2008.
Rock fans from a later generation will also be pleased to know that some newer acts are out there on the road as well. Projekt Revolution/Linkin Park kick off a summer tour, and continue to tour through the end of September.
Jack Johnson and Radiohead will have several tour dates planned for spring and Summer of 2008. Also, Dave Matthews Band is also touring this summer. They'll be hitting several major cities. They begin at the end of May, and the tour lasts through September.
John Mayer is set to launch his summer tour, starting July 2nd at Summerfest in Milwaukee. The tour runs through August as of now, and also has Colbie Caillat and Brett Dennen.
Jonas Brothers "The Burning Up Tour" will begin in Toronto on July 4th. This is the first time that the Jonas Brothers have started a tour on their own, and they are hoping to have big crowds for their entire tour, which should last most of the summer.
R&B And Hip Hop Fans
Kanye West starts his tour at the end of April, in Los Angeles, and ends in Los Angeles again in June. Jay-Z and Mary J Blige are touring together in April and May. There are several tour dates listed for them, promoting Jay-Z's new album.
Country Music Fans
Kenny Chesney and Leeann Rimes tour this summer a well, with the Pirates and Poets Tour, starting in May and going on for most of the summer. Toby Keith, Tim McGraw, and Sugarland all have separate concert tours that are beginning in the spring and going through the summer months, across the North American continent, mostly in the United States. Rascal Flatts begins a tour in May, and has dates that run through October, all in North America.
Reunion Tours
It isn't only new bands that are on tour, or even bands that have been around awhile. This summer kicks off a great era in music tours, where bands that haven't been together in many years are coming back together and touring. For instance, New Kids On The Block kicks off a spring and summer tour in late spring, and this is one that should not be missed by any fans, new or old.
Poison is also touring this summer, starting late spring and hitting more than 40 cities along the way. They are going to be joined by Dokken and Sebastian Bach.
Stone Temple Pilots, after being off the seen for eight years, and after being apart for five years, will reunite for a tour of North America that will last for 65 cities. The tour is set to begin on May 17th in Ohio.
Major Tours
It isn't just single concerts that makes this summer amazing, either. The Lollapalooza event kicks off three days of great music - August 1-3, in Chicago's Grant Park. This even is headlined by Radiohead, Rage Against the Machine, Nine Inch Nails, Kanye West, Wilco, and The Raconteurs.
You can also go to the Live, Raw & Uncut Tour, which is launching July 3rd at Energy Solutions Arena in Salt Lake City. This tour runs through early September, hitting more than 40 stops along the way.
As a fan of any type of music, there are going to be plenty of chances for you to see your favorite artists, all across North America and even in Europe this summer. Keep your eyes open for tour dates and shows near you!

Amputated Fingers and Knocked Out Teeth - What to Do With the Amputated Or Torn Out Body Part
Everyone likes to watch those TV shows about emergency room life, where trauma victims roll through the door on gurneys, with blood squirting all over the place. One common scenario is the unfortunate victim who accidentally amputates his finger. The person comes in by ambulance with the stump bandaged up to stop the bleeding, and what do you see? You see the nurse place the amputated finger on ice, before the surgeon strolls in to save the day by reattaching the body part. This scenario is pretty close to the truth, and is commonly what you'd expect happens in the ER. But, is it the right thing to do? What's the best way to preserve an avulsed or amputated body part?
Finger avulsion or amputation is a common ER situation. To best preserve a severed body part, you NEVER place it directly on ice. This is because, the amputated body part is no longer is perfused (lacks circulating blood). Therefore it freezes much easier and is prone to immediate frostbite and critical vascular damage. If you want a prayer of saving the amputated body part, avoid direct contact with ice. Cold however, does slow down tissue death due to lack of oxygenation. A solution or slurry of saline water with a little ice is the way to go. In a pinch, you can make some saline, with 1 teaspoon of salt mixed in with 2 cups of water. Pure water is a poor preservative.
For dental avulsions, or getting a tooth knocked out, it's the same idea. You want to handle the tooth by the crown only, avoiding touching the root. The goal is to protect the periodontal ligament which holds the tooth in. You can rinse the tooth off with clean water and attempt to place it back in the socket, before seeing the dentist. Don't worry, you probably won't make the situation any worse. Just make sure the victim doesn't swallow the tooth! If you have to bring the tooth to the dentist, place the tooth in a cup of milk. Milk is the next best thing to a specialized medical solution, and can preserve the integrity of the periodontal ligament for about 3 hours.

Free Camping in Southern California
Looking for a place to camp in southern California this winter that doesn't cost an arm and a leg? Here are a few completely free camping spots that will keep you warm as well as keeping your wallet in your pocket.
Amboy Crater
Located along historic route 66, in the Mojave Desert, stands an extinct volcano, the Amboy Crater. The crater was once a popular tourist attraction along route 66, but with the decline of route 66 brought on by the Interstate system, the area has seen much less use. From interstate 40, head towards Amboy. Its roughly halfway between Barstow and Needles.
The land around Amboy crater is owned by the Bureau of Land Management. You may camp in the area for up to 14 days free of charge. Don't expect much in the way of facilities, though. There is a large gravel parking lot and some picnic tables with shade. There are also a couple of vault toilets.
But, you came to hike inside an actual volcano, right? Go for it!
Box Canyon West
Located south of Joshua Tree National Park, near the small town of Mecca, is a beautiful canyon. Box Canyon has some gorgeous geology. The canyon walls are primarily sandstone and have been carved by wind and water into amazing shapes. On a full moon, you can let your imagination run wild and pick out many shapes within the canyon walls.
To get there, take Box Canyon road either South from I-10 or North from CA 111. There are plenty of places to pull off the road and camp inside the canyon, but access to the side canyons is blocked to vehicle access. Depending on the time of year, you may also see some gorgeous desert plants in bloom.
Traffic on Box Canyon road is light. Some areas have litter and very soft sand, so try to stay on a packed trail unless you're prepared for beach driving and recovery. You could easily spend several days just hiking in the canyon! As with many BLM lands, you may camp for free up to 14 days.
Jawbone Canyon
Jawbone Canyon is an off roader's paradise. With over 300 square miles to explore, you won't get bored. Set in the Mojave desert, two hours east of Bakersfield, Jawbone canyon is pristine high desert with just enough access trails to get out and see it.
To get there, take CA-14 northeast from CA-58. Take a left on Jawbone Canyon road. From that point, you are on BLM land and can camp anywhere you like, but for more privacy, you might want to head in a bit deeper and find a side road.
If you're looking for peace and quiet, Jawbone Canyon may not be the best choice on the weekends, but during the week, most of the ATV's pack up and go home, leaving the area quite peaceful. As with other BLM land, you may camp for free up to 14 days.

Choosing the Best Roll Down Shutters
Most roll down shutters are custom fit to be used on a specific opening. Generally when they are installed in new construction they are installed right into the wall or window frame. Some are powered with electric while others require manual rolling up and down. There are many uses for this form of window protection. Also known as hurricane shutters, rolling shutters, and security shutters, they are multi-tasking shutters that perform a lot of different jobs, not just one.
When used for security, roll down shutters provide a deterrent against theft by providing an additional layer that any would-be burglar would have to go through. In many cases, the material that the roll down shutters are constructed from are so impact resistant that it completely stops the thief from getting beyond it. Many residents use their storm shutters as a security shutter as well, closing them at night for protection.
Rolling security shutters can be put into a wall or inside the window frame of new construction or can be attached to the exterior of existing structures. In addition to providing the additional safety by deterring intruders, roll down shutters also increase safety during severe storms, protecting the windows from flying debris and thus protecting the interior of your home from water damage, wind damage and other damage caused by storms.
In some states, roll down shutters also improve the fire protection of a home. Because the heat generated by fires usually breaks the glass of windows, these fire proof shutters protect the glass and keep it cooler, making it easier to control the possibility of fire from outside sources.
Use of these shutters can increase the value of your home, especially in areas where storm damage is very common. Having these installed during construction or after construction, there is a low impact to the visual effects of the exterior of the home. The added security factor of the roll down shutters gives an increase in value as well as a decrease in insurance rates on the home while protecting the valuables inside from both theft and sun and weather damage.
Commonly used in Florida and California, the roll down shutters provide added protection from high winds and storms of hurricanes and other severe weather. Because of the added temperatures in these states, they also commonly provide additional cooling ability to the homes by blocking out the heat of the day and decreasing energy costs because of the lower use of air conditioning units.
There are many manufacturers of these products. Doing a simple search for roll down shutters, rolling shutters or security shutters will turn up a good amount of different sites to visit, each with their own unique process or material. Doing research on the different options as well as time needed for production and installation is a good way to start your search to find a reputable brand.
