Palmdale is a desert city located in the Antelope Valley, on the northern edge of Los Angeles County, California. Devil's Punchbowl Natural Area
The Devil's Punchbowl is a popular hiking preserve located along Big Rock Creek. About a mile for the San Andreas Fault, the Devil's Punchbowl, as its name imply, is a large natural bowl-shaped depression, surrounded by 300-foot walls of rock. At the bottom of the bowl is a stream, which can be accessed via a one-mile hike. Some of the wildlife that can be found here includes snakes, lizards and several different birds of prey. The park is free and open every day from 8am to 4pm.
Dry Town Water Park
If you're in Palmdale during the dry months between May and September, visit Palmdale's Dry Town Water Park and cool off in its water slides, lazy river, and various swimming pools. There is also a dining area where you can sit and enjoy a midday snack in between swimming.
St. Andrew's Abbey
If you're feeling like experiencing some local history, visit this picaresque Benedictine monastery. It is 760 acres of lush green gardens and natural springs. There is a ceramics studio where visitors can buy handmade tile saints and plaques made by Father Maur van Doorslaer. In the fall, the abbey has its annual festival, where you can sample delicious food and enjoy some musical entertainment. It is free and open on weekdays and weekends.
Joe Davies Heritage Airpark
Located right next to the United States Air Force Plant 42, the Joe Davies Heritage Airpark has a variety of new and historical military aircrafts on display. You can learn about the rich history of aerospace research and development in Palmdale with your whole family.
Great Western Soaring School
If you're in a more adventurous mood, pay a visit to the Great Western Soaring School. Here you can take a sailplane ride (that a plane with no engine) over the beautiful San Gabriel mountain pines and the ridged undulations of the San Andreas Fault. An FAA-certified instructor accompanies you on your flight to teach you the ropes. Prices range from $96 to $176. Open Thursday through Monday only.
